HELP! Anemone in my powerhead!

Leilani57

Carbon Free Girl
My long tentacle anemone climbed up the side of my tank for the first time in the two years I have had her! Nothing has broken off of her I don't think but there is a part of her that is on the inside of the powerhead and I don't know what to do. I am setting up a hospital tank for her. Below you can see my powerhead in the top left and the anemone. Please any advice will be appreciated!

The same thing happened to my LTA. If it is stuck to the power head unplug it(I hope you have done this already) and let the power head rest on the bottom of the tank. It should pull itself out. LTAs are pretty tough. As long as the base and oral disk are in good shape it should be fine. Mine lost a lot of tentecles, but they all grew back. There are some pics in my gallery when he went for a walk.

I've had plenty of anemones get sucked into a power head. Just turn it off and the anemone will pull itself out. They should heal up pretty well, I've seen some disastrous situations where it looked like no hope and the anemone came out on top. The only problem you may see is that the open wound can get infected. But if it's looking sick you can get some Tetracycline, an antibiotic, to help it heal. Good luck!

As suggestion, do the following:

1- Assure there is nothing really of the anemone.
If there is (it´s common) use carbon media and over skimming to keep other inhabitants safe)
2- There is a probability that the anemone do not leave your tunze powerhead
You can help her with a paint brush. Gently pass the brush over the anemone that is inside or attached to the pump.

Sorry for my bad brazilian english...

A couple of years ago I came home from work to this, (( ignore the algae, it is all gone now ))

Right after getting it out of the PH.

About 6 months later -- right after I redid the tank.

As long as the foot isn't damaged, and you keep your parameters in check (( and cover the powerheads )) it should make a full recovery. Though should try to figure out what caused it to release in the first place, to limit that happening again.

I agree, amazingly recuperative if healthy to begin with. When my gig got stuck in the overflow last saturday nite, I added a little extra iodine to the tank. Not sure if it helped, but within hours it was like nothing ever happened.

you should be fine i freaked when it happened to my bta but it had made a full recovery in 2 months best of luck

Wow! Very impressive Toddrtrex! Just goes to show you how resilient some things are. I would never have thought that an anenome could make a comeback like that. I would have thought things were looking pretty bleak after the first two photos.

Thanks a lot. I know, I was shocked, I thought for sure it was a goner -- and the smell in my place when I got home to that was awful.

It is shocking what an otherwise healthy anemone can recover from. About 2 years ago I was moving my blue Haddoni --- while trying to get it to release from the bottom glass I put my finger through it. It looked like death -- and if I was going to be gone that weekend I was going to pitch it (( so it wouldn't foul the tank )), but since I was around and could keep an eye on it, I left it in. As luck would have it it made a full recovery. I should have taken pictures of it, but it looked so bad that I didn't want to.

hmm...I think we should all double check the post dates prior to responding to posts...this one is from 2008! :eek1:

Silly us :lolspin:
