Well i am planing on going BB this weekend, and i was wondering how i should go about it. I was thinking of putting the rock and livestock in a rubbermaid tub, and siphoning out the sand, then putting everything back, this shouldnt effect anything should it. Or should i remove the sand slowly? Also i plan on rinsing the rocks in some tank water before putting them back to remove the detritus does this sound good.

I went BB but upgraded from a 75 to a 90. I just didn't put sand in the new tank after I took everything out of the 75. I didn't lose anything and water parameters have been great!

Keep in mind that "going BB" means more than just removing sand.

In order to have a successful BB tank (long term, especially for SPS growth) you will need to also upgrade your skimming (wet skimming) more than with "typical" sand tanks.

Also, you will need more flow directed at the bottom of the tank. The flow should keep detritus from settling, and push it towards your overflow so the detritus can be removed by the skimmer or siphoned out in settling portions of your sump.

Also, you will need to siphon out any settled detritus from the display tank. Since your rock is not cooked, it will be "shedding" a lot of matter in the coming months as it attempts to "purge" itself of the built-up organics.

Siphoning, strong skimming, and strong current to keepo these organics in suspension is the true working mechanism behind BB; not just a lack of sand.

These principles are very very important to the BB theory, and without doing them, your BB experience will not be a fun one; trust me.
