hey guys, recently i changed my lighting from pc's to regular flourescents. since then my aussie tusk has been fighting with his reflection and not eating very well. does anyone have any ideas on how to stop him from doing this? i am concerned he is going to stress himself to death, he has been doing this for a few weeks.

Can you put back your other lights? What happens when the tank lights are off, but room is well lit?

cant put back old lights, trying to lower energy consumption due to 600.00 plus electric bills. i will look to see what happens when lights are out.

Is he fighting his reflection on the side glass or the bottom of the tank? Usually, you can put a black paper or background against the glass to stop the reflection. But if it's the side or front of the tank, you can't really cover it up.

he is fighting on the sides. lisa, when i turn the tank lights out he doesnt do it. george, thanks for the thread. i dont fully buy it though, he is deff ****ed off when the tank lights are on. i tried leaving the tank lights on and turning the room lights off but it made no difference. oh and aNOTHER OBSERVATION HE PRIMARILY DOES THIS IN THE CORNER RIGHT BY HIS cave and in the very middle of the front glass.

sorry, I don't know what to advise except maybe change the rockwork around. is it possible he has outgrown the tank?

another thought - even though you need to stay with NO fluorescents for economic reasons, could you compare the color temperature of the new bulbs with the old, and if different, could you try to match the new bulbs to be closer to the type of light the old ones put out?

or temporarily just light with actinics, so you have low light conditions? you could see if that changes behavior...

i was only running actinics before due to the white bulbs i had giving off a nasty yellow color, so that may be a issue. i am going to try and raise the lights maybe it will help.

There is absolutely no reflection in the front and side panels of a tank. Unless of course your tank is made of different glass than a standard tank but I see no reason a tank would have been made with reflective glass. Im guessing its something totally different. What size tank is he in and how big is he?

Even if it's made of a different material, that won't matter. This is a physics and light issue. If you don't believe me, put on a mask, stick your head in your tank, and look yourself in the eyes.
