Looking to find out what this is. It's been on my rock for a little while now. Seems to be getting bigger

How does it feel to the touch? It's kind of hard to tell from that picture, but it might be some type of macro algae.

It could be dictyota... Google and check. If it is, get it out ASAP and pull the rock and inspect it to make sure every little speck is gone. It's a terrible neusance algea.

It feels soft. Stringy. Like it looks pretty much, I could barely feel it the first couple times I touched it. Some other guys were saying sponge. Something in the pic they were calling that. I know the gsp and aptasia.

Just did some research on that McKinney I sure hope not. It's whitish, tan at best. Have you seen it that color

Yes, it's often tan to olive in color. I would recommend removing it regardless just to be safe.

Dictyota usually attaches to rock and is hard to pull off without some sticking to it. Even a small part breaking lose or being left behind can quickly grow again.

I'm confused... Are we trying to ID those little strings or that flat saucer looking thing under them? Those strings are probably sponges. That other thing looks more like a macro algae to me. Padina?

Hi Guys, if You are talking about the white stringy stuff, I have a ton in my tank. It started out growing out from under a well established Zoa covered rock I got a couple years back. I always thought maybe it was the way it spread like their roofs as its completely covered that rock, and now braching out more, but the Zoas arent expanding with them. Now I am concerned. Its a 30G tank that all my corral has outgrown, and about the step up to a 100G tank, and a completely new setup, and already apprehensive about the changes, and unknown. I will see if I can get some pics. The white stuff I have is pretty brittle, and will crunch off it handled, but is in too many nooks and crannies to even try to remove without destroying ALOT of corral now. Thanks D

I had what I think is the exact same thing. My scarlet hermits ate the crap out of it. It was a long leafy algae or kelp of some sort.

It's gone now. It would grow back overnight almost, but the hermits kept eating it every day until it decided life was too hard.
