Help identifying algae?

I, along with a group of classmates, have been keeping a reef tank as an assignment for our science class. It's going well so far, but this algae recently started showing up; we're not sure what type it is and what, if anything, we should do about it.

Is it like a thick carpet of algae? Or a dusting?

It looks like it has some substance. If you guys only just started, its likely diatom, cyanobacteria, or dinoflagellates. Or all three.

Normally its a common part of starting up a tank, but I don't think THAT MUCH is normal given how thick it looks in the photos.

Did you use tapwater, or RODI water when you set up? Can you tell us a bit more about your system?
