I looked up black spot shrimp goby on Google and went through the images. Just because that spot on the cheek looked unique. That gave me a picture a fish that sorta looked like it but was hard to tell. So I looked it up by the scientific name given and got a bunch of hits on Japanese diving sites that had these pictures of live specimens. The scientific name was cryptocentrus nigrocellatus. I tried to see if they had a pistol associated with it because of the picture but the only thing I could find was that they reclassified its genus because it associated with shrimp. Everything else I found was in Japanese. If that is the goby the genus is the same as a yellow watchman so hopefully that would give some indication of behavior.
Well I hope that is helpful. I think if someone had an idea of as more common goby they probably would have chimed in and maybe still would. That would make sense with this guy cause I don't see evidence of them in the aquarium trade. But what I did see said reef biome and that the size seemed comparable with a watchman. It may be just one of those examples that shows that you never know what you will find at the lfs.
