this crab is so agile and i've given up using a net to catch it. it has murdered my cleaner shrimp, a firefish and 2 harlequin shrimps.
please help me stop the massacre.
Get a plastic soda cup with one of those plastic straw holed tops. Cut the hole to a size that the crab will fit, but small enough that your fish will not steal the bait. Put a piece of shrimp in it just after dark. You should wake up with a crab in it in the morning.
Get yourself a water bottle, cut off the top and turn it upside down and reinsert it the bottle. You'll need to staple the top on so it doesn't come off. Put some food in the bottle and put it back in the tank at lights off. Make sure the top is leaning against a rock so the crab can crawl in. Once he's in there's no escape.
I went through a similar thing. My old sally lightfoot killed a new cleaner in about 15 minutes of it being added! My wife went fishin'. She put a piece of shrimp in our large dip net and waited... she was a little slow her first few times, but Sally wanted to eat. She eventually caught it and we had it mounted over the fireplace. Actually we took it back to the lfs... hmm... where do you live and when did you get it?
hi rev, i live in hong kong now, used to be in the great white north (canada). i had my first reef tank (10gal) around 1 year ago and gave to a friends 4 months later so that i can have a bigger tank (50 gal)
for the tricks you guys mentioned, i have tried them all , and it just wouldn't get it's butt inside...damn! Any more suggestion?
That is a sally light foot crab. I had two in my tank also that needed to be removed because they got to big.
Get some big glass jar, tilt the top so that is is next to a live rock, place the raw shrimp and after lights are out it should fall right into the jar and would be unable to get out.
Just make sure the opening of the glass jar is at least twice the size of the crab. This always worked for me.
Good luck,
Steven
Btw, beautiful tank. Don't they only sell arowanas in HK?
hi heuerfan,
there's a street packed with aquarium shops for fishes, corals and of course arowanas. reefing is getting hot here
tks for the tips. i'll try to get the damn crab out of my tank and return to the shop
hi david,
tks for the comment. i have 4 sun corals in my 50 gal tank. i don't feed them individually (i think it's a pain on aXX) instead i use KENT Marine ZooMax & PhytoMax (Expert series, in 30ml bottle) directly into the tank on alternative day. Actually I have been feeding my corals with these products for almost 7 months now and i think the corals are quite healthy. Dosage amount & time is also critical, 2 drops of PhytoMax at light on (at least 2 hours before light off) & 5 drops of ZooMax after light off (at least 30 min. after loght off).
besides, suncorals don't like strong light, but they need quite good water flow. as you see from the above pic; the sun's are hiding under rock / light demanding corals...
have fun man! feel free to share some of your experiences...
stephen
ok i am gonna start dosing kent zoo max and phyto max today. hope this helps my sun coral cause i cant feed him enough latly. he is losing polyps rapidly. well about one every three months or so. still a decline instead of a growth...which is what i want.
I've heard you can just put a glass in the tank leaned up against the rock. Put in a shrimp. He'll go iin, but won't be able to crawl out b/c the sides are too slick.
with your filter feeding techniques he is most likly so well fed that your not gonna be able to bait him unless!
first try not feeding for three days...not even dosing filter feeding food. then put a piece of krill/shrimp/squid...(something meaty) into a net and wait for him...i would set it down too and hope he goes for it. if hes timid let him be...let him feed..and do it again in a day ..hell think its safe... the only issue here is not feeding the rest of your tank and messing with that schedule...tough thing....i always leave sally lightfoots off my reef list....other stuff too..like emeralds...can grow to be an issue ..........good luck
