Help me pick a camera please

Wondering what camera to buy. I asked before, but now I am pretty sure I will be getting one.

There were mixed reviews on nikon and canon? Are canon cheaper and about the same camera?

I guess I would like a camera good for the macro shots seen here on RC, and what lens, read about the canon 100mm f/2.8 (not even sure what that is, focal or focus?)

I do really like the cameras that have the high tech look to them with the extended lens maybe like the XTi or something, so that might be my price range.

Also, the canon 100mm f/2.8 isn't good for vacation shots is it, like a distance shot, or is it specifically macros? If I wanted a macro lens like that and also one good for vacations with possibly a canon rebel XTi (or what camera in that price do you recommend?), what should the price about be in the end?

First of all I must say both Canon and Nikon make great DSLR cameras. I use a Nikon, but that is my preference. If yo go with a Canon I have seen some good pics taken with it. If you go with a Nikon get the D80
(my preference is the Nikon :) ) Both companies make great a great lens. For the Canon the 100mm is great! For the D80 the 105mm macro is fantastic! Plus there are companies that make a lens for either camera, like Sigma, and Tamron which are both a great lens at about have the price of the Nikon or Canon lens.
As far as a lens goes for taking vacation pics you would probably want to invest in a decent zoom lens.

If you click on my red house all of these pics were taken with a Nikon with a Nikon 105mm macro lens (the non VR) as that baby runs for over $700 new.

I hoped I have helped you a bit. If you have anymore questions please feel free to post them on here as you will get good answers from a great group of people.

Canon or Nikon again.

I personally use Canon and think that it's easier to find equipment used if you decide to get more into the hobby later.

The Canon 100mm Macro lens is actually an amazing lens. It's considered very sharp as a macro lens AND regular use lens. It is great for taking portraits and stuff. The big disadvantage is that it's a fixed length so you have to use walking zoom and it's a bit long for most situations.

I may be wrong, but at Nikon has alimted selection of lens with the newer bodies. Or should I say a limited selection with the auto focus, I remeber this playing a role in myself getting a cannon. If you want the auto focus you have to go with the AFS lens. Nikon guys is that right?

Yes it is a tough choice to make. I can't decide between the Nikon D40XI and the Cannon Rebel XTI. I also want to get a good macro lens for it.

Ognid,

Thanks for the links, I'm looking at the Nikon D80 as well.

Whats a good macro lens to get for it. I don't want to spend over $500 for it. I want to be able to take good close ups of my sps.

I just checked all of these links on resellerratings and apparently they
are pretty bad people do deal with. So please disregard my last post.
I was going to order a D80 from one of these places and apparently they are all bad.
Just when I thought I found something good. Please look at www.resellerratings.com for reliable dealers. I should have done that before I posted the links.

If it's D40(*) vs XTi - Canon wins IMO. With the D40 you've got limitations on your lens selection. The XTi can use the full range of Canon lenses.

I changed my mind deciding between the D80 and canon 30D. I discovered that the D80 is almost the same as the rebel XTi actually, just a little more user friendly, so for a few more hundred dollars you get to learn it a little easier.

For a good website to order from with low prices, go for www.bhphoto.com

I tried out the # (70 or 75?) - 300mm canon lens with stabalized thing on it so the pics are never blurry when you move and the 100mm f/2.8 macro lens at the store on the XTi; amazing. If I want a vacationing lens and a macro lens, will I need both of those or will one or the other work for both?

Also, then I was convinced at going with the more new 30D. It is less MP than the XTi, so can anyone tell me why it is a better choice than the XTi? Will it take better pictures?

I am going with a 4gig memory card also, is there a good brand I should go with?

Thanks.

The XTi and 30D are two very different cameras.

The 30D has a few more advanced options, and the body has more metal compared to the plastic lighter weight body. The Rebel has a much smaller body compared to the 30D. I was recently asked why I was going with a 30D compared to a Rebel, and I liked the feel of the 30D better. I was going from a pro-slr to lower end semi-pro camera.

As anyone will tell you camera skills are more important than which camera you use. There have been many examples between the two.

I would also agree on skills, not the camera. There have been a lot of nice photos on RC with lower end dslr cameras.

So, if I decide with the 30D (trying not to get way too expensive, so I don't think the D200 I should get), should I go for the 100 mm f/2.8 and that 70-300mm with the stabalizer?

If I was you and you wanted the quality of the 30d, I would pay a little extra and get the Nikon D200 which blows both these camera's out of the water with performance and quality if you want a pro dslr.

 Actually the D200 has a few more pixels but that's about it. The Canon (pretty much all of them) has much less noise when using higher ISO settings. ;)
