help me pick a camera!

The Hp one is nice I had the model down from that for awhile. It was good for general pictures. I have the model the step up from the Nikon one and love it. It does much better macro shots and seems a little more robust in its build. Either way they are both good, but I would go with the nikon.

Don't want to make your decision any harder but I bought my daughter a camera through eCost.com and there are many great deals there. I have bought several items there and haven't had any troubles with the company. I even got my Denon home theater reciever there.

Here is a camera I thought looked pretty nice for the money.

Minolta

Optical zoom is probably the best thing for taking macro shots of corals. Both of the cameras you chose only have 3x optical zoom. I would try to get one with 8x optical zoom :)
Much like the one itZme posted, or the Nikon 8700 has proven to take very good pictures.

EasyShare is a nice camera and very cheap... I agree with cowcio - optical zoom is the key for good tank pics.

lol... thanks for confirming my opinion on that.

I like to act like I know what I'm talking about. What I wrote was from my experience only. I had no idea about it being factual or not.

I think that is why many digital cameras don't take as good of tank pics as a 35mm. My Mom's 35mm takes some sweet tank pics!!!!

Before you buy one, check some of the deal forums at places like www.fatwallet.com or www.slickdeals.net

spend some time researching the available features to see which ones you want.

the ebay item looks like a good deal. I'd check out the company/seller before buying it though.

i ended up gettin the Canon S1is off of ebay for 150 new with a warrenty.. won it last night at 10:30.. hopefully it will be here by monday/tuesday at the latest and i can start pretending like i know anything about taking good pics lol..

Congrats on the new camera! Looks like a nice one. I still use my old Olympus 2.1 megapixel since I have all the lenses and it has 10x optical zoom. It looks like yours can use threaded lenses too which makes it much easier to get good macro shots. Look for a macro lens set when you get ready to get really close up :) I have a +1, +2 and +4 lens and when I'm trying to get good macros I use all 3 stacked up.

One other bit of advice is to get a COUPLE sets of GOOD nimh batteries. They come in capacities up to 2800mAh now. I used Energizer e2 batteries when I first got my camera and I could barely get 50-75 pictures out of a set. When I got some 2300mAh nimh batts I could get 150 or so. Be careful not to get stuck with lower capacity nimh batts (like 1800-2000 mAh) or they will die much faster. Do NOT get ni-cd as they are very weak and will not usually even power a digi cam.

It is really nice to have 2 sets so you can keep one in the charger and the other in the camera and swap them out when you need to get a shot and your camera is saying you need more power.

When I try to take good macro shots I get the subject centered and then use the zoom to fill the frame with the subject, then push halfway down on the shutter to auto focus. Sometimes I can see that it will be out of focus so you can carefully move the camera closer or farther away by a very little bit and you will see things come into focus. Then I take about 4 or 5 frames like that and dispose of the not-so-great ones.

Here are some macros from last year in my yard.

awsome pics kevin.. what camera did u say those were from? also are lenses expensive and what kind would u suggest.. as i know NOTHING about cameras lol any help would be great! :)

Thanks, My camera is an Olympus C2100-UZ. It WAS a state of the art camera about 6 years ago.

Your camera can accept threaded lenses. I think they are 58mm for your camera.. I didn't look real hard. Mine takes 45mm lenses.

Here is a review of YOUR CAMERA. It even says you can get an underwater housing for it! Now THAT would be neat for coral macros :D

HERE'S AN EBAY SEARCH of lenses that should fit yours.

I would also look into getting a 512mb or larger compact flash card. Don't pay retail at Best Buy or anything. They can be found for almost nothing online now that they aren't the latest technology.
HERE IS A 512mb for $8 after $10 rebate at Tigerdirect.com where I have bought lots of stuff with no problems. There are some with capacities up to 4gb. That 512mb card would hold around 400 pics on your camera so you'd be looking at around 1500 pics on a 4gb card :D
