Tank has been setup since December, with corals, nems and softies added slowly from end of February till about August, when I decided to let things grow in and see how they responded. During that time, everything was doing fine. In fact, I had an orange tort an a birds nest mini colonies that I bought for cheap since they were essentially, receding this past May. Up until the beginning of august, they were doing well. Then for whatever reason, they died at the beginning of August. Didn't pay much attention, since I've had ZERO luck with SPS. Fast forward to 2 weeks ago, corals were doing well, when I had a pair of bluethroat triggers that died. Now, I say PAIR because I found one fish, but was never able to locate the second one. The pair were each about 3 to 4" long. No other fish died but those 2. Well, since I lost the triggers, my corals haven't been opening up. The leather sometimes opens up, maybe every couple days. The nems aren't dead, but they aren't fully opening up. My zoos aren't opening up, either. On top of it, there's this weird brown stringy algae stuff that has since began to populate the tank. I've done 30 gal WCs every 3 to 4 days since a week and a half ago, and don't play to stop until I've replaced the total tank volume. As far as I can tell, there aren't any metal objects that may have been tossed in by my kids. The tank is covered with window screen, then a canopy (can't be too cautious with kids). We haven't fumigated ourselves, nor have the neighbors.

Any thoughts? I'll post some photos on a subsequent post.

First thing that stands out is that is not enough food for that many fish. Lose the pellets and go with only fresh and frozen food and increase the amount. You need to see if your PH is really that high. Get a regular test kit and see if that 9.4 is correct. If so why is it that high?

Leather corals can release toxins in the water. Read on this at other threads. Not saying it is your problem, but can be.

I'll recheck the pH with a kit when I get home.

Does the brown, stringy, algae have bubbles in it? Does it fade when the lights are out? What are you doing to keep nutrients @ 0 with that bioload?

the one i described doesn't; however I have noticed, what appears to be Dinos popping up towards the end of the light cycle, which isn't present the following day.

To be honest, prior to the last 2 weeks, I was only doing bi-weekly water changes of 30 gal. I was feeding rather heavy (somewhere around 3-4x/day of a mixture of frozen, pellets, flakes and nori). So to have a 0 nutrient level surprised me.
