im not sure why but all my inverts keep dying

Salinity 1.025
ph 8.2
ammonia 0
nitrite 0
nitrate 40ppm

^it's a lot better used to be 120+

30 gallon
I have about 1 1/2 live sand bed
40+ lbs of live rock
I used filtered tap water
going to invest in an RO/DI unit soon

my snails were doing well then yesterday they all died
I bought a cleaner shrimp today and 30min later it was dead
I have two pieces of coral, they never open anymore
they're always closed

I have foxface
2 false clownfish
yellow watchman goby and pistol shrimp(only invert that stays alive) -_-
all my fish are fine

i'm really not sure what i'm doing wrong
the tank is about 2 months old, cycled around day 17. I know cycled or not, it's still a new tank

everything was fine, now my inverts keep dying. I can't seem to keep my cleaning crew alive :/

all my snails
my cleaner shrimp and looks like my fighting conch all died :eek2:

any advice would be helpful

Do you have any algae like blooms brown or red growth it might be dinos and it is known for killing inverts

lots of brown algae

like the stuff you get when your tank cycles. I don't think it's anything unusual

I'm a noob tho so I have no clue

I'm trying my best to get the tank running/looking it's best and even with all the effort I put in it seems to no be enough

only picture they would let me upload

i dont think inverts like nitrates that high! neither do corals!! try to knock your nitrates down to 5 or less! How are you acclimating your inverts??

Not sure if I should leave my lights off for a few days or what
but now my coral is dying and my tank just looks bad -_______-

I know they don't like the high levels thats why i'm trying to correct it and get it as close to 0 as I can

Do a 50% water change soon, then another in a few days. That will knock the trates down for now, then find out the cause of the increase. The filtered tap water may be a problem for you. Try using bottled distilled water for now, see if that makes a difference, then get RO/DI going.

had a similar problem once after I installed a check valve that had a copper part in it (bought at local hardware store). after 2 days, lost around 50% of everything except fish, which were totally ich free... Since he didnt use proper RO DI water, I suspect he might have some copper plumbing parts in his house.

Do you have ATO? It sounds like a swing in parameters such as s.g. Also not using RO water may be the issue since all kinds of minerals/ heavy metals are present in tap water. Inverts are much more sensitive to these and also to parameter swings than fish are; that is why your fish seem fine.

I would rehome the Foxface. 30 gallons is way too small and these fish produce a lot of waste. I don't know that this is the source of the problem but it is likely contributing to your nitrate problem. Also I don't know if anyone asked, but how did you acclimating the inverts?

the original post was 2 years ago. I doubt this is still an issue
