I recently kicked off a new cycle with my 80g a couple of weeks ago. I started to experience the brown algae blooms, which I found out was normal. I visted the LFS this past weekend and asked about controlling the brown algae. I was told that putting in 10 ceriths and a couple of other snails wouldnt be a bad idea, even while cycling the thank. I went ahead and brought them home. Today I was messin with my powerheads and noticed alot of material being kicked up from off the live rocks, which I believe is snail droppings. I positioned my powerheads so that this material continues to be kicked up from off the rocks and sandbed. Its beginning to enter the overflow so Im hoping this will clear up the water....

Was it a bad idea to place the snails in the tank afterall? Should I go ahead and remove the snails? Since excessive nutrients- ie dead shrimp, damsel, etc usually kicks off a cycle, would keeping he snails in the tanks be ok? Please advise...Thanks!

The stuff your refering to as snail droppings could just be die off from the rocks. Were your rocks uncured or cured? IMO snails are good they are constantly cleaning. The only reason why it would be bad to put them in now is if you still have ammonia readings. i try to wait for everything to zero out before adding livestock.

My live rock was cured, but there was some die off by the time I got it into the tank. Should I leave the snails in?

If your tank is cycled and you are ready for a cleanup crew then yes leave them in. If you still have ammonia readings then your cycle hasnt finished.
