Help needed

Hey,

Hopefully in the not too distant future, I would love to get a young peacock mantis (or something equally as colourful and interactive)

My question is, does a juvenile mantis look the same as the adult but smaller? How will I know what I am getting?

Worse thing is, I'm going to have to get my LFS to find one for me from TMC (apparently the only supplier of marine life in the UK) so I will need to give him specific instructions....

does this sound possible? can you help me tell him what he should look for?

Young O. scyllarus do indeed look like miniature scaled-down versions of the adults, complete with the characteristic "leopard spots" on the carapace, blue eye stalks, and colorful pleopods and uropods.

In short, you can't miss 'em. And if can't tell, it's not O. scyllarus. I've seen one as small as 1.5" and there was no doubt whatsoever about the species.

Regards,
Dan

too right, you'll know, just tell the people it must be green or brown with a red and blue telson (tail) and red and white rapts
VERY hard to miss

oh by the way your not the only person that cant get a peacock, ive been chasing one for about 8 months. in my country its easier to get illicit drugs than an o scyllarus.
pretty stupid ay..

Great advice guys, thanks muchly.

Fingers crossed I'll one day be able to get my hands on one.. if not, I guess I could numb the pain with those illicit drugs. lol

Um, are you saying that the PEOPLE are dying, or the animals? Either way, I think you need to do a little research. Many people keep peacock mantis shrimp healthy and happy without even breaking fingers. Respect your animal and it will respect you.

Alternatively, "peacocks" is some infectious disease I've never heard of. in which case I think this is the wrong forum for that... a doctor's appointment might be more suitable...

haha,

I'm so excited. Just got permission from the boyfriend to get a Mantis (other than little Tyson who hitchhiked into our lives a few months ago).. he said it can be my little project to keep me occupied while he's off with the army for 8 months. Sad he's going, but dead chuffed my nagging finally paid off. Will probably end up putting Tyson back in the main tank with the fish and coral as he apparently won't get any bigger than 2.5cm so won't be a threat.

Got to do this on a budget as I'm a student, so it might take me a while, not to mention the above mentioned hassle of trying to get a Peacock, but I'm really excited.

Yay!! Just had to tell someone who cares... my friends all think I'm a complete weirdo that needs to get out more ;-)

Any tips for setting up a tank, let me know.

Too many people are dying peacocks, you should pick a different color one to dye with people who are killing peacocks????? Burrr?

Did you know Smallpeacocks was the first disease irradicated by humans?

Ok I'm done.

Oh I tried e-mailing James but no luck. I'll try something else but Justinl should know how to contact him too.

Most people don't understand me when I try to tell them what these guys are. All of my coworkers use to make jokes about eating my pets and apparently in Spanish the word for shrimp also can mean a male body part, so my past girlfriend would look at me wierd sometimes when I talked about my mantis shrimp. I had pics of them on my phone and would say I was going to show her pictures of them. That was interesting for awhile since we mostly spoke in spanish.....

Also, good luck to your boyfriend. My best friend is in the same boat, well probably not the same boat but he just joined up. Hope they both come out alright. Sooo many puns, so little time....

No worries Koshmar, I managed to log on that site in the end.. after many many attempts. It seems pretty quiet on there though :-(

Boyfriend will be fine, he did Afghan last year so isn't going anywhere bad!!

Yeah they had a lot of problems with spam bots but it use to be a really good site, hopefully they will get it back up and running

Got given a tank, yesterday bought all the necessary and set it up... only to find it had a bloody hole in it!! I know, I'm an idiot for not checking tank for holes!

So, managed to get to fish shop literally 2 minutes before it closed and bought a new tank.... goodbye student budget!! Very excited now though as I've finally been able to order a peacock from my LSF who will hopefully get one through TMC, although they can't guarantee the size. or even whether it will be a peacock but i'm very excited anyway!

Fingers crossed I don't have to wait too long!!
