Yesterday my Fluval 406 filter started to throw small bubbles through the output chamber...and late last night what sounds like the fan was making all sorts of noise like it was struggling...I piped snaked the valves to make sure nothing was stuck in them, and it seemed to work a for a little bit but then started making the noise again, early this am it was so loud the tangs were freaking out...so I had to shut the unit down, now it has emptied a 1/3 of the water out of my tank and onto the floor when I woke up about 45 mins ago I stepped on a very soak and wet carpet...can anyone help and tell me what might be wrong with it...I was thinking the suction ring and maybe need a replacement one as well as a fan, but I wanted to reach out here first and see if anyone else has had this problem, and found some other cheaper alternative (cheep, salt water...right...lol) look forward to hearing others responses....thanks!

Is it fair to assume that the fluval was leaking from where the body and motor head meet? If so, try replacing the giant o ring. I like to coat mine in petroleum jelly to help with the seal. Would help if you told us if where you think the leak is coming from (assuming it is a leak). As for the bubbles, sounds like you have air trapped in the fluval. Try shaking it a bit to get all of the bubbles out. The sound you speak of sounds like it might have air in it. If the intake for the fluval is anywhere where it could take in any air at all, that is a bad thing. It is meant to be full of water and water only, no air. So you would want to move the intake to ensure it is taking in to air at all.

Yup you have a leak.. where is it?

Usually all it takes to get the air out is to prime it until you are just pumping water, and then tap it a few times to release any trapped bubbles and prime it again.

Mine has leaked around the o-ring as already stated, I also use petroleum on the o-ring. Mine has leaked a couple times from not making sure the lid was secure.
