I just purchased the D90 today and for some reason I cant take pics on the auto setting once in awhile itlll work...What its doing is focusing then when i try to push the button down more it wont snap the picture..Also I just noticed there is a -E- on the top moniter even when the camera is turned off does this mean error?also this is my first camera so I may just be an idiot

Can't help with the auto bit, my D200 doesn't have those. The -E- in the bottom right corner should be there whenever there isn't a memory card in the camera. When there is a card in the camera, it should display remaining memory.

What lens are you using and how close to the object are you? Just for example, if you are using a nikon 55-200 with a minimum focusing distance of say about 4 feet. If you are 3 feet from the object, the auto focus will go in and out, but since you are too close it will not release the shutter.
