Help: Overflow box noise

Im setting up a new tank (75g) using a eshopps large overflow box. The setup is a beananimal and all the pipe work on the outside of the tank to the sump is pretty quiet. Problem is I'm having a ton of noise from the water entering the overflow box and then water falling down.

I have tried to move all the drains on the back up, hoping to raise the water level on the front side but that did not help. Tried doing a search but most threads that come up are adjusting the main drain valve (again this is pretty quiet).

Anyone have a solution for this? I can post pics or a video if needed.

Help: Overflow box noise

How about installing 90 or 45 degree elbows on the bulkheads that lead to the exterior box? If the elbows empty beneath the water line you should be good.

Unfortunately the interior box is really slim, so adding anything inside the box isn't an option.

I did start playing with restricting the bulkheads themselves. Blocked both about 75% which brought the level up. I'm worried though that by restricting the flow my return will eventually overfill the tank.

Is the problem the sound from the interior or exterior box?

Interior fix: fabricate a piece of acrylic to form a baffle to disrupt the waterfall effect.

Exterior box: pvc elbows that drain below water line.... installed in the holes in the back of the tank into the overflow box.

Interior. I'll see if I can fab something up.

The exterior and all the drain pipes are super quiet - I'm soooo close

I think your bulkheads are located too low.

My flow never fully submerge the bulkhead's interior diameter. Thus water in my internal box falls to roughly where my bulkhead is. That is roughly 2" in my case. No noise.

Was it because your tank has a tall rim so the external box had to be installed low?

If the upper edge of your external box is high enough, u can restrict main drain and/or increase flow to raise water way above bulkheads to get closer to water level in main tank. Just make sure 2nd drain and emergency drain can handle in case main drain is blocked.

I had originally thought exactly what you said. Although the external box sits lower thn the internal, so even if i kept the external to the internal level would only be right above the bulkheads. This does help with the noise but its obviously not practical because it will overfill.

Thought about this all night and i think i may know one big part of it and was a detail i left out of the original post. I added a piece of acylic to the internal box to raise the dt water level. This piece is only ~2" tall which i think is creating a ledge inside the box and thus causing the dripping.

Wont have time to try my thory today but hopefully tomorrow afternoon i can cut a long piece of acrylic that will be long enough to always be submerged at the bottom.

Will update when I try. Thanks!

Not sure why i cant edit.

This sentence....

Should say....

Although the external box sits lower than the internal, so even if i kept the external level to its rim, it would only be right above the bulkheads on the internal side.

Sorry for any other typos, posting from my phone.

I had this exact problem with my Synergy Reef Ghost 16" overflow and to make it silent I had to do away with the variable standpipe and basically turn it into a secondary emergency standpipe that is slightly lower than the main emergency standpipe. This allowed me to fine tune my full siphon standpipe so the water level in my overflow box was high enough that the water falling over the edge into the overflow box makes no noise. Kinda hard to explain, but I hope that makes sense.

I think you have the center drain with valve & air tube fully open. Try to close it till the water level increase where the water is just skimming the surface on the red drain

Try putting a little filter floss in the internal box. This should quiet the drain noise and still allow water to flow.

Quick Update - The problem has been fixed. The picture below explains what I found. Made the modification last night and the tank is silent, I only hear the hum from the Eheim return pump and the max gyre.
