This is exactly what I have been screaming this whole time.

Yeah but you're excitable and we all ignore you.

Surfer ~

I knew what you were saying and agreed with you (even though I thought the G10 was overkill). I think the message got lost in all the back and forth between you and jtrasap about the XSi. Somehow I came out the good guy :D

It's just the Internet. Grow a thicker skin. ;)

That's the motto I live by. It's not even fun for me unless I'm stirring the pot just enough to end up taking a few shots.

Jeremy, one thing about DSLRs that no one here has mentioned is the shutter life. As you know, Point-and-Shoots don't really have shutters- the CCD sensor is electrically charged to "capture an image". DSLRs, on the other hand, have moving parts that wear overtime (mirror, shutter, AF drive, to name a few) Most consumer DSLRs have a shutter life of about 50K actuations (about 100K on prosumer models).

If you are a shutterbug and shoots an average of 500 images per week, that is about 26,000 shutter actuations in one year! My co-worker's [DSLR camera] has failed after only about ~40K shutter actuations and needed to be serviced.

Not trying to scare you (we all know that DSLRs are superior!) but it's one thing you should consider. Oh yea, by the time your shutter fails, I'm sure you'll be on your 3rd camera body anyway ;)

Jeremy,

I would say that the only reason you have to go with a dslr is if you are somewhat serious about photography. I came to the same crossroad you are right now a couple of years ago, I chose the dslr as a long term investment, not just for taking pics of corals, but for everything (my travels, family and friends, portraits, art, fashion, etc. That's why today I have over $4,000 in camera and lenses as well as flash. I don't regret it cause I really love photography, but not everyone shares this kind of love. Before ever using a dslr I also was using a cheap p&s and got decent results like mothra posted, in fact before my dslr, I had a $200 camera that was given to me after it was a year old. I didn't pay for it, but I got the pictures I needed to sell all my frags, and had no complaints from anyone that they couldn't determine what they were buying from my pictures. Anyway, that's my 2 cents, I'm trying not to repeat what everyone has already said. Hope this helps.

You've all been very helpful and I truly appreciate everyones efforts. I've really learned a lot and still have much more to learn so this isn't the last you'll hear from me I'm sure. Hopefully I won't incite so much controversy in the future!! LOL!!

Thank you!!

Jeremy
