my N. wennerae was acting fine thismorning but i went over to look in the tank about 5 min ago and he was layin on his back!!!! is still moving but not responding to anything!!!!please help.....i just got the little guy friday and everything was going really well until now

...Sounds like the death curl. Just sitting on its back, waving its swimmerets and not moving at all, except the occasional spasm or dart around the tank, ending in the same position in a different place.

Definitely check your water quality. How long did you acclimate? Did you temp acclimate before you put it in your tank? This is a pretty new mantis, right? This happens most commonly after acclimation, maybe a couple of days after. It happens because of stress such as improper acclimation, bad water quality, or just plain stress. Also happens from bad molts. Seems most common in wennerae. Most you can do is maintain water quality and turn out the lights. Don't go near the tank more than a couple times a day if you can. Also someone once said that an airstone in the tank will help, though i can't confirm or deny that.

ok, i just got him on friday morning. i temp acclimated him for 20 minutes then drip acclimated for 30-45 minutes  i thought that was enough time for acclimation because there wasnt much water in his bag and it was replaced about 3 times over with tank water during acclimation. he was fine up until this morning. he even killed and ate a snail on friday. i had the lights out all day and i replaced some rocks in the tank with a piece of rock with large enough holes to provide him a more suitable den. he looks better than earlier today but is reluctant to leave his old den. if i put the bamboo skewer near him he will grab it so he is movin around a little bit. i think he's ok now but im not positive....he is on his back sometimes now but it just looks like hes just kinda "relaxing"

any help is apreciated

first off i would avoid putting the skewer in the tank or bothering him for awhile. give him some time. try not to bother him at all.

i have had a couple do this to me and only 1 died. good luck

thanks....the skewer only went that time to check and make sure he was alive. unfortunately i think he is dead. he is not moving anymore and there's a nass. snail by him....probably waiting to chow down. im not sure what i did wrong :(

Sometimes it just happens. The best you can do is make sure the first few days are stress free. Proper acclimation and no light the first day, then take things slow. Even then things happen. Were there any chemical things going on around you? paving a road outside, cleaned with some heavy duty cleaner?

nothing that i know of. the only thing i can think of is he seemed a little stressed when i got him....he was moving but very slowly. but then once i started the acclimation process he became lively. he is definately dead and i disposed of him. stomatopod.com said that they would replace him though if i would cover the shipping, so that is what im gonna do but for now im broke and need to get some $. thanks for all the help everyone :)

haha not a lot.....i think like $35.....i just gotta go to the bank and make a grab some cash. i just dont have any in my wallet right now :)

devils_rejects: thanks sooooo much for the offer, but ill be alright. i just gotta take money out of my bank account (which will tick my dad off cause he would rather i dont "waste" my money.....he just doesnt get it :) hahahaha). thanks again for the help
