Help serpent star, leg missing

Ok, so I have a serpent star and about two days ago one of it's legs was found at the bottom of the tank. Now the wound is bigger and it almost looks like it's trying to split down the center. Is this possible? Is it normal? Is there anything we can do for it? Any info or ideas would be great. Thanks!

I had a serpent star that apparently wasn't getting enough food, so he ate one of his own legs. He eventually grew the leg back. Then later, it looked like he was eating the top of his central disk from inside. (I don't know what actually happened...thats the best way I could describe it) The hole got bigger and bigger until all that was left were legs which writhed around for awhile. Now he's regenerating again from one of the legs that had the most of his central disk still intact.
