i have a 29 gallon biocube with a black and white clown i have had for about 2 years. Just recently purchased a smaller black/white clown and should of quarantined but didnt. I was way too excited to see if the larger clown would accept the clown. It was friday when i purchased the fish. Today i see my large clown twitching which i think is normal signs of pairing. but the dorsal fin is down. Can it possibly be sick? No signs of white spots (ick). Could it possibly be anything else? Im concerned because when he twitches it seems like i he swims off and is somewhat uncomfortable. I did a 5 gallon water change on thursday. please anyone help before my clown dies!

Yes, a certain amount of twitching is normal for pairing, and in fact often times the larger fish will clamp its dorsal fin while spreading its other fins and twitching. However, if the fish has clamped its dorsal and other fins, and seems to be "drooping" so to speak that could be bad. And as you pointed out, if it is sort of shaking its head and then rapidly darting around the tank, it is indicative of a parasitic infection. The reaction you are seeing from the fish is a esult of the discomfort of parasites biting its gills.

So, is the twiching behavior etc. only occuring when there is an interaction with the other/new fish?

How is the fishes behavior otherwise, i.e. respiration, appetite etc. If you can post a picture or better yet a video that would be very helpful. And yes as you mentioned, it would have been better to QT the fish, but I can understand your desire to get the new guy in there, so live and learn I guess.

Do you have a QT tank?

Yes I do have a quarantine tank. Now I do not see any signs of white spots and no it seems that it is twitching away from the other fish. Only dorsal fin is down also it looks lethargic to me. It seems that there is a whitish color below the dorsal fin in small patches barely visible though. Is still eating. Started dropping garlic extract to food. How can I treat the fish in the quarantine tank???
