Help! Tank Setup.

I am a newbie at all of this and had to move right before i was getting ready to set my 125G tank up. I have just begun to set it up and am starting to get very close to finished. I just feel like I may be missing something and wondering about the correct order I need to be doing things. Right now, I'm trying to wire my Icecap ballist and lights. They aren't working and it has got me puzzled. I also have to connect up my sump & protien skimmer. After that, I'm not sure what the next step is... I know I'm going to have to start with sand and water. Then I'll need to add live rock.

get a large trash can for mixing saltwater. you probably want to add the sand first, then add mixed saltwater to the tank. the brute 44g is the standard one to get. it costs a bit more than the roughnecks, but the extra strength and being rated food safe is worth it.

i'm going to be up in roanoke some evening this week (for a UA run), if you don't get the lights working i'd be happy to swing by and take a look.

for the rock, i'd start that off in the trashcan with a pump circulating it for ~2 weeks, so that most of the detritus from the initial dieoff doesn't get into the tank. unless you are getting established clean rock from somebody.

Where are you located in Roanoke? If manderx can find time you can't do any better IMO. He can start you off on the right foot. If things don't work out, then give us a shout and I'll see if I swing by and try to help out.
Please keep us posted.

I'm in Raleigh Court near Grandin Village. Right now I'm in the process of reattaching all of the 3/4" PVC pipe that the movers cut to break the tank from the base(That and getting the lights to work). Plus, I've got random equipment to figure out if they work or not. I'd love for an expert to review my setup and fill me in on anything I'm missing or am going to need.

I am allways around ... But I second Ade's post ..If you can get Manderx .... Anyhow post your questions and dont be afraid to ask for help ... I am in Roanoke and I can help with some things ... I have extra stuff lying around ..let us know ...

how's tomorrow evening (wed)? sounds like we can have a little party if other peoples want to show up? multiple opinions is a wonderful thing.

I'm actually going to a concert tomorrow night. I'm free Thursday evening, friday evening, and all day saturday & sunday. I'd love for anyone who wishes to come and give me their 2 cents...

alright, thursday then? is 7ish ok? i'll be up at UA at 6:30 or so, then head over to your place. i can find something to do in roanoke for a while though if you'd prefer later. i've been meaning to check out LCDs at bestbuy to replace my old crappy CRTs anyway...

Actually, how about I meet you at UA around 6:30ish? I'll prob get there early to take a look around. I haven't been by there since i got started setting up. It would be a good refresher course for me (Plus, get me excited all over again about starting the whole ecosystem). Then you can just follow me back to my place. Anyone else who would like to partake is more than welcome. I'll provide free beer/wine/drinks and munchies in trade for opinions.

I just wanted to thank you guys for coming out and giving me some advise. It looks like I have a long road ahead of me, but that's half the fun. :-) We'll have to schedule a trip to Bburg in the near future so I can see some more tanks and start gaining an understanding of what I want to work towards. Thanks again!

Andrew
