help test bulb...

I just got my halide bulb and my ballast wont fire it... I want to know if someone local has a 175w se setup thats willing to test it...

What brand is the new bulb you just got?
is your ballast an m57 (probe start)?

bulb brand is plusrite item:MH175/HOR/MOG 14k

ballast is and m57/h39 with capacitor


bulb wont fire

Plusrite bulbs are suppose to run with that ballast, Try disconnecting the ballast and cleaning the socket on your fixture and the bulb mogul base with alcohol, give it a good clean that has worked for me in the past.
Let me know if that works.

I think the ballast may be busted... the electrician that repairs the overhead lamps at my job gave it to me for free.. I guess I'll just wait till next time I see him

welll after a lil... crazy testing I found out what my problem is... my mogul socket is making good enough contact.... I direct connected the bulb to the ballast and boom! we have light I was so happy/still am

but.. now I have another mission... homedepot doesnt sell moguls :| crap have to wait until monday to pick some up :\

ya I tried the alcohol and it works now I also removed the capacitor... do I need this thing? the bulb seems to fire and work fine without it... I think I might have wired that incorrectly also.

yes you need the capacitor, w/o it it will still work but it will force the bulb ignitor and will be hard on the bulb.

ok.. problem again I forgot what wires I took the capacitor off of..

it was either from power to ballast or from ballast to bulb... on the negative side.. I believe

Capacitor goes in the live wire (end nipple side) not the common (threaded side)
