Help Treating ich in a fish only marine aquarium

Have you considered chloroquine? You run no risk if there are not any inverts or corals. You do not need to move your fish. No testing levels, no filtration issues, just dose once and that's it.

Thanks I will look into it. Any idea where to buy this product?

Quinine works and is less expensive but has some drawbacks. These include a smaller margin between efficacy and safety, the requirement for daily water changes, and probably it is less effective.

Chloroquine is dosed once and remove in one month by carbon.

Places to find chloroquine:

In the US, your neighborhood pharmacy or an online Canadian one. Both require a prescription. In UK no script is required.

You could go to your local vet who could issue a script and sell it to you.

You could email Louis at a vet pharmacy I now use. They have a vet on staff that issues the script. Pm me for info.

Or you could buy bulk at fish chemical dot com. What they sell will treat 25,000 gallons and for some reason they don't seem to require a script.

wait back up.. i have tank which is basically fish only with live rock. a few mushrooms which i can give up to a good cure to save th fish from ick. I eventually want to turn this tank BACK into a reef tank.. I was going to do hypo,,, but are there safe meds to use like Quinine?

I have used chloroquine with live rock multiple times. It will kill all of your algae but I noticed no other Ill-effects.

I honestly see no reason to use quinine. I liken it to using Morton's table salt vs instant ocean.

Still confused. I should be using chloroquine ...? My tank is to large to remove fish let alone try and catch them all without stressing them. Was in prices of doing hypo in main tank. I took out most of the inverts. Few mushrooms ect. Over past I've days went from. 1.0024 To 1.021 and going down slowly. Problem is fish look to be getting worse but still eating and fat. Thoughts. ??

You can rapidly drop the salinity, keeping the pH stable. When I used this method in the past, I would bring it down to 1.010 - 1.009 in 24-48 hrs.

I've been incessantly promoting the use of chloroquine for Amyloodinium and Cryptocaryon on this board. I have experimented with it in Fish, sharks and rays. I have used it many times in tanks with live rock. I have shared it with many others outside of RC. I have had nothing but success except in cases of advance Amyloodinium.

I will post a lit review in the coming days because as much as I have tried to share this treatment here and prevent fish deaths, my words might as well be written in Braille.

Translation: When I first started with chloroquine - I dosed it while the fish were in hypo. I initially read that it worked best that way. I later found out that it works at typical sea water salinities too.

I will try to post a thread detailing more specifics in the next couple of days.

In the interim - hypo will definitely relieve symptoms and possibly clear the infestation. I would continue on that path. With the size of your tank and difficulties capturing fish, your immediate options are limited.

In brief it is 40 mg/gal or 10 mg/l. Dose once, ambient light only. No water changes and remove with carbon in 1 month. It doesn't get easier than that. Many references mention treating for 7 to 14 days. I have not tried a short course.

Ok. Will try and find some. Tank water volume is 800 gallons. How expensive I'd this stuff. Was doing hypo. Down to 1.019 and going. But might be to late. Fish are breathing hard and real pale arg. .... Who sells in Chicago?

Local pharmacy. It will be too expensive. I would drop to 1.009 tonight. You have nothing to lose. Don't forget the buffer. You sure it's ich and not velvet?

Email aquainfo33@yahoo and they may be able to overnight it if their vet is working tomorrow. Make sure you send a pic. Otherwise they won't fill it. I'm guessing $75 for that much. Not sure though. Canadian orders take weeks.
