Help with cleaning out macro-algae?

Hi folks,

I am buying a used tank and system from someone who has let algae run wild. There are still some critters living in the 90 gal tank but the algae needs to be cleaned.

I don't know what type of algae it is but I am attaching a picture.

How do I clean it off all the base rock and sand? How about the glass (I suppose I just scrape it off the glass)? How about cleaning the sump, pvc pipe, skimmer and other equipment (I assume algae is in there, too)?

Should I keep some/all of the algae for a 'fuge that I have yet to put together? Or should I dump the stuff?

Thanks for your help!

That mostly looks like hair type algae. A good cleaning to all equipment, skimmer and pumps etc, will help it all run at peak efficeincy. Water changes and the use of a good phosphate remover will help drop nutrient levels. Also the use of biological control such as turbo snails, astrea snails, Cerith snails, lawnmower blennies etc. will help control it.

Thanks, billsreef for your advice.

Would you recommend using white vinegar and hot water for the cleaning? Or is there another method of cleaning and materials you would use for this hair type algae?

Thanks!!
