Help with controllers

My search for reliable power strips with timers has eventually led me to the subject of controllers. Never seen one...don't know much of anything about them. I followed a link to one that seemed to have the capability to control individual plugs on a power strip/center. The website info was not of much help to me.

I recently bought an Aquamedic digital timer/powerstrip for some of my lighting needs. After a couple of weeks the timer would no longer turn off the daytime plugs and turn on the nighttime plugs. I have returned the timer for credit. I have later learned that there are concerns with fire hazard with this product. A Google search found several other brand name timer/power strips but all of them looked EXACTLY like the Corallife product. I assume that they are all made by the same company. There are problems with buying individual timers to plug into a powerstrip for lighting control...the timers are so big that you can only get about 2 timers/strip.

I would like to run 2 MH ballasts, 1 T5 ballast, 1 moonlight, 2 heaters, and a fan at a minimum. It seems that the controller aspect provides protection against a rogue heater cooking the tank as well as more flexibility in controlling lighting. Is this correct. I also have a Pinpoint ph monitor, digital thermometer, a kalk reactor, twin dosing pump for kalk and topoff, a skimmer, return pump, and 2 closed loop pumps. There will probably be other devices in the future.

Any comment about the use of controllers and recommendations about specific brands/models would be greatly appreciated.

i recently got an aquacontroller 3 and love it. i can't imagine running a tank without one anymore. i can bring it to the meeting at ade's if you can make it and want to check it out.

I'd love to see it. I am going to be at the meeting. I'll arrive early 11:30ish and need to leave by 12:30 or so. Hope that this might overlap with you. Please let me know what your plans are.

I'm with Matt. Aquacontrollers rock! There are other brands of controllers out there, but Aquacontroller seems to be the most popular. They don't work very well with water in them though.... Found that out the hard way.
