Help with durso overflow

I just set up a new 90 and it came with a durso pipe setup. The pipe has 2 holes, 1 on each side near the top. It seems to be sucking in air and not creating a full siphon an causing micro bubbles everywhere. Can anyone help and explain how this works or anyway to fix it?

Here is a picture of the overflow

Dump the durso and do a herbie

P.s. that's how a durso works. 1/2 air 1/2 water.. You need bubble traps or filter socks to deal with micro bubbles.

Is it the adjustable type? looks like it. either way make sure its all the way down. You might also have a small return pump and it's not dumping enough water into the overflow.

I've tried it all the down and it is now all the way up a. It's the same. I have a mag 18 return so I don't think that's the issue lol

Is this a new setup? What kind of sump do you have? If it doesn't have baffles with a bubble trap, ofcourse the return pump is going to suck it into the DT. In my 90g I don't have a problem with that. When the water drains, it comes down that's Maybe 4-5 inches below the water level in the sump with bubbles, but the baffles and the bubble trap takes care of that. Maybe add a filter sock to help break up the bubbles.

That's how it works. I also IMHO think your pump is over kill. Plumb it with a gate valve and turn it down some.

A durso never creates a full siphon. Air is part of its design. It pulls air down thru the hole on the top and it travels down the center of the pipe and the water travels down the sides. The holes on the side are the siphon break. The object of a durso is to allow you to keep your drain wide open where you would have to adjust a full siphon by gating it down. The wide open pipe is not as prone to clogs so an emergency drain with a durso isn't typically used.

The air and the noise is why the durso standpipe is hated. So you have to either learn to love it or replumb lol

I don't like this lol

The water level is above the side holes but somehow air is still being sucked in

I personally don't feel that my system
Is loud although it could be at times. If I clean the top of the over flow by removing coralline from the grill water flow better and quiter. I don't have that crazy slurrrrrrping noise. Either way I hope you got enough info on this. Maybe ear muff are the way to go with the noise. Lol! As for the bubbles..... Filter sock.

Thanks for the info! I think I may go the herbie route and def a filter sock.

With a herbie, do I need a valve on the drain pipe or can I run it without?
