Update

Haven't posted to this thread in a while so I thought I would give an update on my tank and recent events with it, good and bad.

First the bad: Lost my LTA when i was away on vacation for a week. When i returned, it had moved and got caught in one of my mp40's it seems and I found it face down in the sand. When i turned it over, this is how it looked:

A few days later, my RBTA also got caught in the mp40 (you would have thought that i learned my lesson and put my foam covers on...not!) but he is recovering nicely i believe. Anyhow, right now he attached himself under my Goniopora. Here is a pic when he first attached after the encounter with the mp40:

I also picked up last week a six line wrasse, put him in and all seemed fine but that day was the last i saw it. It will be one week tomorrow and its still MIA.

Loosing my LTA was very dissapointing but I understand this happens with these animals. My most recent loss (today) is really disheartening. Going on 4 and half weeks now, i have been keeping a beautiful powder brown tang in my QT. I put him in the QT the day I got him and been following a preventative treatment for him which included the use of Prazi Pro the first week followed by 2 weeks in Hyposalinity. He was doing great during this treatment and was eating very well. Things changed this week for the worst though. As of this past Monday i started noticing that his appetite was diminishing to nothing and he was acting lethargic. I decided to end my hypo treatment one week early and start bringing the salinity up to match my DT so I can transfer him. I brought it up over the next 4 days and he was still acting the same way more or less. Here is a short video on his behavior:

Often he would lay flat on the ground. In anycase I transfered him today to the DT. He kept to himself for the most part in one end of the tank but took a few strolls. Found it odd that he actually tried to pick at some of the corals. He was like this for a couple of hours then I noticed he started acting very eratic and was going I would say bonkers, spinning may times and slamming to the ground! The last time he did it, he stayed on the ground and looked dead. I took him out and put him back in the QT and started a dose of Prazi pro thinking it may be flukes or something. I then had to step out for a bit and when i returned, to my dreadful discovery I found him on the floor dead. He had jumped out to his death. Here are some pics of him in the DT (very short lived) and then back in the QT and then out:

I must say this was one of the most unbelievably saddest experiences I've gone through. I did loose a blue hippo tang a while ago but that fish was sick to begin with. This powder brown was healthy and my QT experience was going well so I don't know where things went wrong, makes me even question the use of QT at all. I have a cardinal fish in my QT as a permanent resident to keep it cycled and it is doing fine with no issues and water parameters are fine. Oh well.

Now the good. Added some new corals and clams and they are doing great. Here are some pics:

This is my update. I'm hoping this string of losses with my fish does not continue. Although i did also add a royal gramma and it is doing great so not a string but nonetheless.

Tasso, sorry to hear your loss! I lost a cinnamon clown last year from my 92g tank and couldn't find it for months until I remove my DIY LED light for cleaning. There it was on top of the fixture all dried up!

You said you keep a cardinal fish in the QT to keep the tank cycled, do you have similar filtration system set up like protein skimmer, live rocks...etc for your QT? What was the reason for keep the tank in hyposalinity state for the Powder Blue, was it of ick that you saw on the fish?

All i have on my QT setup is a small powerhead and a Aquaclear HOB filter and a heater with an ATO setup. Tank is bare with a few pieces of PVC and not running lights.

Was following a preventive treatment for the tang, he did not show any signs of anything when i got him. The treatment is for 1 week to treat with Prazi pro initially...then for 3 weeks to either use copper or hypo salinity...i chose hypo. Then bring salinity back to DT and transfer

Nitrite is poisonous to fish even at very low level. I wonder if that contributed to the demise of your powder blue tang.

It may have, nobody really knows. I would think that if that was the main factor, he would have gotten better and not worse when i transfered him to the DT. Once he got in the DT, everything accelareted downhill.

Hey Simon, can i ask how you go about to clean your skimmer? I've noticed that mine has collected alot of gunk or detritus all over the skimmer itself in its chamber and I'm thinking I should probably take it out for a thorough cleaning. New to this so asking for some tips since you have the same skimmer.

This is how I cleaned mine. I take the whole unit out and completely dissemble it including removing the impeller from the pump. I then soak all the parts in diluted muriatic acid for about an hour. Many people would prefer vinegar but it takes too long for me. The muriatic acid that you buy is about 31% so you need to dilute it to about 5%. Always add acid to water to dilute and not water to acid for safety.

After soaking use an old tooth brush to clean off all calcium deposits and rinse all parts really good with fresh water. Then reassemble and put back in your sump.

When you dissemble the pump, make sure you pull the ceramic shaft out of the impeller before soaking in muriatic acid. The acid will dissolve the calcium built up between the shaft and impeller. The impeller should spin freely around the shaft.

Make sure you wear gloves and eye protection as muriatic acid is very corrosive.

I dont know if I have the confidence to work with acid, how long would it take to use vinegar? Also, how do i remove the impeller?

I run my pumps for about an hr or 2. I just put them in a half bucket of hot water and maybe 2 cups vinegar and run out for a bit. If you can dump a bunch of powerheads in the same bucket, make it regular maintenance and extend the life of your equipment :)

I have not used vinegar to clean before so I will let others comment on that. As far as removing the impeller from the pump, you just remove the holding plate first then just pull the impeller assemby out with the shaft. Don't lose the rubber caps from each end. Pull the shaft off the impeller and soak everything in vinegar or MA.

So you just run the equipment in a vinegar solution? You dont take them pump apart and the impeller? I would have thought you would use just vinegar with no water. I think i read somewhere you could give your skimmer a vinegar bath by putting it in a 5 gallon bucket half way full of vinegar and running it. Would that damage it?

Do you also clean your Mp40's the same way?

I've done a disassemble and soak, but running is just as good. Straight vinegar shouldn't, but it's just as effective with the dilution, so why waste the vinegar, ya know? I usually disassemble to inspect for anything stuck in there debris-wise, rinse, then run in the vinegar soak.

Thanks everyone, today is my day to do all this maintenance which will include the skimmer and UV sterilizer. Hopefully all goes well. Got a lot of what looks like detritus sitting at the bottom of my sump chambers, do you guys clean/vacum that out also?

Sometimes, I just stirred them up when I do water change.

Tank update

Thought i would post some pics of my tank. So far so good overall, i've lost a few things but nothing major.

This is a nice bubble coral piece that I traded my maxima clam for.

Various other pics including new fish and fish that have been with from the start:
