Red algae is taking over my whole tank, could it be time to change my filters in my RO/DI filter? If so, what cart. would you reccomend using? I have a well so I'm guessing mostly metal filter? No chlorine or flouride. The current ones are almost a year old...

You could test your make up water to see if that's where the problem is coming from. What are your tank parameters?

If your filter cartridges are a year old and filtering well water, I would definitely change them. Most manufacturers recommend changing filters every six months. The membranes are supposed to be good for up to 3 years.

Depending on how many cartridges your unit holds, you are going to need a new sediment cartridge and carbon block cartridges for the other spaces. I am not sure about the metal filter deal, I think the sediment, carbon and membrane will take care of that for you.

I think that adding a bunch of red tipped hermits to my tank really helped...my sandbed is clean now and they have removed almost all of it off the rocks.

you know i had a red algae problem also, no matter what i tried i couldnt get rid of it. i dont have an ro filter, so i was getting my ro water from krogers! well one day i was at wal mart and i had my jugs, so i tried it out. in a week the red algae problem had completely gone away and has not returned. hopefully you can find a similar answer to your problem by cleaning your ro filter or trying the local wal mart
