help with sump

OK we have a 55 gallon we've had for 14 years (used to have just plastic stuff and a few damsels into it until recently...now all live things and corals). My husband knows some about plumbing but has never been into the aquarium much until now. He's looking into the sump stuff and I'll start searching this out in a sec...but I'm hoping you can help me get pointed in the right direction.

What sort of biological filter to people use now? Just a refugium? We have the stuff in a sump from BEFORE bioballs.

Also...he wants to know...how much flow should be going INTO and OUT of the refugium.

1) Sump to house protein skimmer along with refuge is currently the most common means of filtration. No Bioballs...

2) As for flow through the sump most would like slow to moderate flow through the refuge other wise to much gets washed away if its to much.

Thats just from what I have read. Other people may have other ideas or opinions.
