Just having fun
Well i got home from work today and first noticed that my live sand is starting to turn brown. upon furter investigation i noticed that there were dark spots on my LR also it lookes like a type of algae is starting to grow on my glass. Sorry i cant post a pic to make it easier. But it looks like little brown strings. My fish seem to be doing well. Can anyone offer me any suggestions as to what it might possibly be? or a way to correct it? Thanks

I assume it's a newer tank?

If it is you have a Diatom Bloom.

How old is the tank & what fish are in there now?

It is a 12 Gallon aquapod. It is occupied by 2 yellowtail damsels (yeah i know bad choice...But they were cheap and i figured if they died i wouldnt be out a whole lot.) I added them to the tank on Monday so five days ago. everything has been perfectly normal until i got home today.

How long has the tank been up and running?

Odds are it's a simple diatom bloom. It happens whenever you start a new tank. Pods will eat diatom.
What is your water change schedule (How much & how often?)

What kind of clean up crew do you have (Snails, hermits?)

The Tank has been running for almost 3 weeks. I figured it was too soon to add any fish but with the advice of my LFS the tank had cycled and everything was ok.

As of last night my parameters were
Nitrites 0
nitrates 0
Ph 8.2
ammonia 0
Water temp around 78
I do a 2 gallon water change once a week

I currently do not have a clean up crew. OOPS i guess you learn something everyday. do you have any suggestions on what to use. I am still fairly new at this and just kind of learning as i go. thanks

Last question (I promise ;)

Do you use RO water?

I like Premium Aquatics cleaners the best (www.premiumaquatics.com)

In my 24 gallon Nano Cube I have

Nassarius Snails (Great for the sandbed, get 5)

Nerite Snails (Small but work on the tank glass, sandbed & rock, get 3-5)

Baha Hermits (Love these guys, they do an awesome job, best hermit you can get - Avoid the Blue Leg Hermits, they are monsters - get 4-5)

Cernith Snails (Worthless IMO but I only have 3, maybe I don't have enough in my tank. Try a few and see if you like them)

Margarita Snail (Likes to clean the rock, big, strong snail, get 1)

Stomatella Snails - Not sold at PA, might have luck finding someone locally that has some. Mine are nocturnal and reproduce like crazy. Likes to clean the tank glass and rocks. Do some reserch before adding them and see if they are for you).

The main thing to do is take your time (and get rid of those damsels imo). A clown is just as hardy as a damsel and they aren't as big of jerks. Also having 1 clown in your tank means less waste than 2 damsels. Once your tank gets established you can get another little fish like a firefish, Royal Gramma, Pseudochromis or Naso Tang (just kidding about that last one :) )

Diatoms will go away as your tank matures and as your cleaner crew does their job.

If anyone tells you to get a sand sifting star, cuke, conch or other sand sifting critter that will outgrow your tank within a day slap them :)

Do you have anything like Chemi-pure or Purigen in the back chambers? I use both. Go to Dr. Foster & Smiths website and read about them. Purigen makes my water crystal clear.

I use premixed water from the LFS. Thanks a lot. i guess i am going to the store today to do some shopping. thank s again for your help
