I am not sure what is going on. I got back from a short trip and noticed that my maxi jet fell from the suction cups into my colony of green acro. there was a pretty good size section that had bleached. I left it alone and fixed the power head...the next day the section increased and I noticed a smell permiating into my house. I decided to clip the bleached area (which really stunk) and disgard it and place the good section back into the tank.
Today, day two, odor is still present and the coral is still bleaching...

1) is it doomed?

2) is the die off from this causing the smell?

On the first day arriving back I did a 30 gallon water change and everything else is doing fine. water checks out okay. Ph is a little higher then usual for me a 8.40.

all help is much appreciated. thanks jenny

Is there a possibility something else died in the tank, a snail or something of that nature? Is it bleaching or loosing it's color? If I where you I would keep fragging the coral, 1/2 to 1" behind the dead area's and say a prayer. I recently had a very nice mili colony STN for no reason, fragged the whole thing but it still didn't help. It did stink pretty bad, but not enough to notice until it was out of the tank. I would not worry about the PH...actually Anthony Calfo recommends a PH range of 8.4 to 8.6...

Good luck!
Patrick

thanks patrick.

I fragged it really well last night and moved it in the tank. the smell may just have been a fluke because it is gone. I got a couple of good frags that I think will do ok...keeping my fingers crosses. there is still a large piece but now i noticed this little crab hanging out? is that a good thing??? never noticed it before?

as far as the coral goes it almost seems as if it was just loosing its flesh... or is that the same thing as bleaching??? sps are a new adventure for me.

Woow I had the same thing happen to me Monday, cept now i'm missing 1 of the 4 suction cups for my powerhead... :(

Can you take a pic of the crab in the acro? Does he have fuzzy legs? After being stressed, I sometimes lower the acro so it isn't being "baked" in the light. Also, If the acro doesn't pull through, I would like to donate a frag or two. O.K., 3-4. :D
