Help!

I'm having some trouble with my 12 gallon nanocube. I can't seem to get the temp regulated. First the tank was to warm, tracked that down to a powerhead, so since there is no corals in the tank right now I turned that off. I am going to be buying a chiller before I put anything else in the tank, since I am also going to upgrade to MH lighting. So now the powerhead is unplugged, and the temp is around 75. So I went and bought a heater for the tank. I put the heater in compartment number 2. Now no matter where I put the thermostat on the heater the tank is only getting to 76. It seems as if there is no flow going through the back area. There are not a bunch of different levels as I have heard people talking about. Maybe at the most there is two different levels of water put that is it. I am not running a high water level at all, you can see the top of the water outside the tank meaning the level is under the black trim. Any help would be appreciated.

Any ideas on this? I must have an older model or something as my nano cube has four different chambers in the back. Anybody with a older nano cube?

Temp when I shut the powerhead off was 83.4, yesterday morning, after sitting for around 12 hours it went down to 75.3. I then turned the heater up and after about an hour it was slightly over 76, but the heater was off, I then turned the heater up as high as it will go and after ten more minutes it was off again and about .3 degrees higher in the tank. It is a 100 watt submersible heater, so it should be able to do the job. Yes I do have a pump on now, it is a mini jet powerhead, model 606, that one is in the last chamber. The mini jet pushes the water out front to the display part of it. Tonight when i get home I am going to put the thermometer in the same chamber as the heater and see what the temps are in there. Thanks for the help, any more ideas are definetely welcome.

I don't have that size but I know most people replace the stock powerhead with a maxijet 900. Was it the stock pump that gave you problems?

That is awfully weird.

I just bought this setup used, a couple of days ago, so it already had the mini jet in the last chamber for the circulation pump. It did not come with the stock pump so I do not know how that performed. It also came with another powerhead of similiar size as far as flow goes, around 150 gph. I don't remember the brand and model though. This is the powerhead that makes the temp spike up, which really is fine. I am wanting to add MH lighting anyway as my nano has the one PC light bulb in it. So adding a chiller is not a bad idea to control the heat that will be there. I know this is a weird problem and it has me kind of stumped. I am going to do some more testing tonight to see what I can come up with, maybe the brand new heater I bought is a hunk. Any other thoughts is appreciated.
