i need help. i have my first anenome- a purple hatian condilactic, about ten minutes ago it startyed excreting a large amount of mucus, a VERY large amount, directly from its mouth hole, which is gaping open very wide to let all of this mucus come out- its stringy and very gross. is my anenome dying? what do i do? the anenome seems to do well sporadically, being totally open, stretching its arms wide, then 12 hours later it is shriveled up very small, then back to being fully huge and open. it eats well, loves current, and seems to shy away from strong lighting. what can i do? why does it go back and forth between shriveling up and being fully extended? what is all this huge amount of mucus? is it dying? help me please!

Anemones sometimes expell waste, and maybe that's what yours is doing now. How long have you had the anemone? What are your water parameters. Condylactis gigantia, which is the scientific name of Haitian condy, are quite hardy, so don't assume it is dying yet. Could you post a few pics? And again, post as much info. as you can regarding your water/tank parameters.

my water premeters are 2 nitrate,0 nitrite, 0 ammonia, 0 phosphate, 8.2ph, high kh and high calcium, only problem i continually have is the temp, which ue to the light is around 86f. the lights are duel actinic/daylight at about 6watts per gallon left on for about 12 hours a day. today the anenome is back to stretching out and looking great, with no signs of mucus pouring out. why does he shrivel up to almost nothing back and forth so often? is that normal? he seems to try to hide from the lights also, is that normal? he hasnt lost his pigments which i thought needed lots of light, but i worry that he will loose it from avoiding the light so much. he really freake me out last night. the lights have two built in fans. any ideas how to help the temp lower? could that be whats causing him from being at the top of the tank where all the light is?

this is normal, it's just taking a dump. sorry to sound vulgar but that's what's happening. they usually do it after they ingest a meal. I used to give mine a frozen cube of mysis and it would do this about a day or two later.condy's are actually rather hardy I had one for years and only got rid of it b/c it got too large and was stinging other corals. they also move around a LOT!!! so he will eventually find a spot that it likes. water temps are fine they come from the caribbean where 86 degree water is the norm in the summer months(ask me how I know:)) many people say that they also wont host clowns, this is BS every clown I have had has taken to one. the only thing to worry about is that they do pack quite a sting, so if you have a weak or sick fish it may end up as lunch. I had an ailing yellow tang that my condy grabbed and made a quick meal of. all that said I think these are perhaps the easiest nems to keep.
