Help!!!!

I have a 35 gallon hex tank with LR . I'd decided to replace my CC bed with a sand bed, I took out the CC and put the white sand in, now my aquarium is very cloudy, I took out all of my fish but leave the LR, Will the LR be ok>? and can i put my fish in now ? because the fish are in a bare bottom hospital tank, and I don;t want them to get stress. Wat can i do now ???
 
How long has the new sand been in the tank? The live rock will be fine through the dust storm. Do some tests on the water, and see what your ammonia, nitrite and nitrate levels are. Stirring up that CC bed probably let a lot of detritus out and into the water. You have the fish in a hospital tank, so you might as well let them hang out in there until the dust storm settles.
 
I agree with Captain Amazing,
I wouldn't put them back in util the dust settles and your sure your not going to get a new cycle. Hopefully it will settle sooner then later.
 
I completely remove the CC, and all the dirty water with it, I take out 50% of the old water and dump the other 50 down the drain. The sand had been in there for 24 hours now... The water has clear up alittle bit, btw, I have no filter in the hospital tank I put a LR in it with a powerhead. Amonia, nitrite and nitrate are fine. I have my snails in the tank as soon as I put the sand in, and they still miraclely(spelling) alive today...
 
Sounds good then. Just dust from the new sand you put in probably. Powerhead and live rock is fine for the fish in the QT. You only plan on having them in there for a short amount of time, so don't worry about that. Let the dust settle a little bit more, and put the fish back in.
 
even if you rinse it or not when you put it in it will be cloudy.


its hapenned to me 6 times and every time it cleared out fine in a day or two...just be patient
 
I just did the same thing and with in about 12 hours it was clear enough to put my fish and CUC back in, but I am not quite as cautious as some of the other people on here and still dusted off my rocks twice after everything was back in. I don't think anything is any worse for the wear.
 
i rinsed it very carefully and the water is still cloudy. i hope my fish will be ok in my hospital tank..btw, how can u clean the sand bed??? my sand bed is 1inch deep

It's kinda of late now. Just let it run and wait for it to settle. It the future you would be wise to research before you dive in. Watch for Ammonia very carefully in the tank where you have your livestock. Have plenty of new water made up for an emergency.
 
The cloudy water will clear up on its own--the sand will eventually settle out of the water and onto the bottom. If you want the process to go faster you can use a simple HOB filter with a filter pad. Actually purchasing one of these might be helpful in that you could later use it on a QT (always good to have the items needed for a QT on hand). Most people do not really "clean" their sand beds. Some people blow off their live rock with a turkey baster and also use the baster to just stir up the TOP layer of sand a little. Getting your powerheads adjusted so you have good flow at the bottom without blowing up a sandstorm will help. Snail and hermits (if you have them) will help with the process also.
 
it's 1 and a half day from the time I put the sand in, the water is still cloudy, I don't want to put my fish in it. Can I use a tetra whisper filter with a filer bag in my saltwater tank? ( bag contain activated carbon) Is it ok to use activated carbon in a saltwater aquarium??? wat harm can it do ?
 
If you have aragonite sand you never clean it. You get yourself a couple of nassarius snails.
Carbon is good, yes. Wash it first or you will have gray cloudiness.

One thing would fix it instantly if you have a cannister and a pump powerful enough to drive a 1-micron filter cartridge. That would have it clean as fast as it can cycle through. A diatom filter could do the same. A 1 micron filter sock can do it.

Stuffing the downflow area with blue white filter floss can help: just be sure to take it out when job is done.

My experience is that yes, it will help. I had a couple of them left over from a freshwater tank and used them when I put sand in my new saltwater tank. The water was pretty clear after about 12 hours. Just remember to rinse the carbon before you use it. Also, if your water has a lot of sand in it, pull out the filter after it has run for a couple of hours and rinse it in a bucket of water then replace it.
