I won't go into explaining what Tv, Av or ISO settings we used because it seems you guys can tell that from looking at the pics :). Let me know what we're doing right and what we still need to work on?

Off the top of my head I'd say that your wife has a much steadier hand. Her pictures are much sharper than yours. It might simply be a technique thing. Pressing the shutter should be a slow, gentle squeeze rather than a quick "jab."

Also try to avoid sticking your elbows straight out on each side. Bring them in closer to your body to provide support.

I know that you said that you don't have a tripod but any kind of support can help. Flip a chair around and lay a bag of dried beans on top. Use that as a camera platform.

Where I'm going with this is that most of your problems seem to be from motion blur. While you certainly need to learn how to manipulate shutter speed to compensate for that, improving your technique is a good start. I also think that you should ignore the advice to turn off IS. The only exception to that is if you get a tripod (and you should). It's part of the camera and Canon put it there to help you take better pictures; use it.

Cheers
