So im thinking of changing somethings around and Im curious about an herbie style overflow. My tank has dual corner overflows predrilled for two 1/2 in bulkheads for the return and one 1 in drain. I currently have a durso in the drain and Im using one of the 1/2 in bulkheads as an emergence drain.
So i got a new sump and since im going to change i figured this is the best time to redo all the plumbing. Would I be able to modify my current overflow to work as an herbie style? I was thinking of changing the return to run up over the back of the tank and using all the bulkheads in the overflows to setup the herbie.

Any ideas about this? Also...are closed loop systems still viable or not worth it with modern powerheads. Im using a tunze 6105 amd it works but id like to add more flow to my tank. I seem to get debris that gathers on the sand bed and id like to add flow to change that. Any help or ideas would be appreciated.
