114 views and no one has any idea what they are called. Well, here is another that no one can name. The face is blue, but the skirts are more brownish than red so not fire and ice.
Where is a good place to readup on zoanthid taxonomy?
#1 probably a form of GPE
#2 also probably a form of GPE or Monster Lips
#3 looks like one of the caribbean morphs similar to AOIs and all those...lots of different ones and they're pretty variable.
#4 & 5 are both pretty common and may or may not have a name. #5 looks like Fire & Ice which are very variable depending on lighting

As far as zoanthid naming goes, I go to zoaid.com. If I can't find them there, I make up my own name, just so they're easy to talk about with my boyfriend. If you don't find them on zoaid.com, you can submit pictures and names. If the website admins like it, you have your own zoa!! Then your picture and name go into the ID pool.

Originally posted by ryansholl For the record, the habit of naming zoanthids has nothing to do with taxonomy.
As of now, there isn't really any database of zoanthid taxonomy. It's because they're next to impossible to Identify, almost as bad at coralimorpharians. I believe Eric B said that.
I am still waiting for pictures to be submitted to zoaid for review.
Yeah, for us hobbyists, there aren't too many givens on the zoanthid taxonomy. Z. gigantus is the best known given (PE's-typically larger polyped, green slit mouth and white striping on the underside of the polyp when closed). Check out zoaid.com and look for jreimer's photo album. He classifies them on the molecular level. Won't likely help you ID to species, as they are all so similar, but you can get an idea of the different but similar looks of the different known species. One of these days, efforts like jreimers will bring us to better understanding.
