Here is my refugium, I need advice (pics)

well here is my refugium. It's about 20 gallons of volume. I haven't really added anything to it, It all just kinda grew by itself. The only thing I put in there is a small ball of cheato and a dsb. I put a couple of my "problem" fish in there as well and 1 turbo snail.

It seems to contain the following
-lots of pods
-LOTS of spiroid worms (which I hope eventually die)
-LOTS and LOTS of little fanworms which I like in there
-A dead Digitata (long story)

The cheato is starting to grow off of the wall which I think is cool. The lights are coralife dual 39 watters with a total of 3 10k and 1 20k bulb.

It looks like I have contracted some slime algae (I think) and it is troubling me. I can turn the flow off to the fuge and treat it but I don't want to if I don't have to. What do you guys think? Any advice about what to add or change is more than welcome. I haven't really done anything with it but I would like to get rid of the algae and get this thing doing somthing for me.

Thanks for reading!

Holy fanworms, Batman! If there's a little cyano in the fuge, I wouldn't worry about it. It's a phase a lot of tanks go through, and the Chaeto should soon outcompete it for nutrients.

i've had everything from hair algea and cyano in my refuge but it all either went away on it;s own or was contained in the refuge.

how did u get cheato to grow on the sides like that? looks like it could use a bit more cheato though, mangroves would look good in your fuge if u have the space

The fan worms will work great for filtering out the microscopic stuff that your skimmer won't catch. I also have hundreds of them.

green chromis are trouble fish?

LOL, they are only considered "trouble fish" because they decided that they didn't want to live in the display and took the long tube slide to the fuge. I put them back in the display and they did the same thing, so that's where they'll stay.

well the fan worms started off small in the cheato but took off and then I slowly moved the ball of cheato along the walls until they attahced.

I was thinking of adding some LR and some more cheato.

How do you put mangroves in there? Somthing to do with styrofoam?

That may be a good idea.

I think that the cheato started to grow on the wall because there were so many spiroid worms on the wall that it just grabbed on .... or somthing. Not sure.

Do you guys think that if I add a Phosban reactor that the red slime will die off?

u can plant them in the sand or make a rock pile to support it, your fuge would look good with them since u have fish in there

As far as the cyano is concerned, I wouldn't worry about it too much. You really don't have that much and the chaeto will out compete is for nutrients once it grows a little more. In my opinion, the main reason for running a refuge is to keep the bad stuff out of the display tank. As long as it is contained to the refuge, it is doing its job.

yah the roots will grow in the sand but the leaves has to be out of the water, i think they are like house plants and only need indirect lighting. i've seen some people grow them up the back of the stand, they can get pretty tall but u can prune them as the get bigger.

so the leaves can be submerged? I've never really looked into mangroves. Will the roots grow into the sand?

Waxxiemann, I came here with the intent on offering my 2 cents but after reading you quote about chuck norris, I can't stop laughing!!!
