type of gracilaria? i have seen this before, most tangs destroy it

I'm glad I don't have any tangs, my light seems to be destroying it too.
some times being a gear head sucks.
I hope my tank gets taken over by it. that would be one cool infestation.

Yep I agree that its Ochtodes. Haven't seen it too much lately, so that would be pretty cool if you could grow it.

A lot of red macroalgaes respond to too much light by producing photoprotective molecules.. a lot of them make the phycobilin compounds to do this. Ultimate result is a greenish appearance to what would otherwise be red algae (and Ochtodes, if this is it and it looks about right, is technically a red).

So... judging by the last photo especially, I'd say its getting a bit too much light.

The apparent lack of water column nutrients doesnt concern me as much as the response of the algae to excess light. Can you shade it at all?

Now.. I should mention, it is possible you're seeing this reaction due to a lack of nutrient levels. But, unfortunately, we dont know enough about its husbandry to be sure which it is. I've noticed over the last few years that Ochtodes really does best in very well maintained clean tanks, so I suspect the nutrient deficit (or apparent one) is unlikely to be the issue.

I'm pretty excited to see where this goes actually. Please keep us in the loop as you gain more experience. I'm sure everyone would love to learn a few tricks for this algae. :)

I woke up new years day of 08 and decided to put together this twenty gallon mixed reef.
I used 15lb of LR and a 10lb piece of dead Tonga that I was saving. I bought this piece when I first got into the hobby and was saving it for another tank but couldn’t resist using on my nano. When cycling the tank I did not feed. I also dosed the tank with lanthanum chloride and did not feed for the first 3 weeks to remove Po4 from the water column. This was in hopes of starting from a clean slate.

The last pic was after I first put it in my tank. ( I was worried about it for a while ) The first set of pic’s was from a few days ago and it looked different and I did not know if it was better or worse.

Now I can see that its coming back It jest doesn’t look the same as under the dimmer light.

The very first pic was of it at the shop I work at.
Nutrient’s available and under 4X 54w T5’s over a 40 long. looks and grows nice.

My tank has low nutrient levels
1X150w DE 5k Aqua Design Amano bulb in a reef optic reflector.
And two 65w PC’s ( that’s about as shallow as it gets ) over a 20 tall.

The halide I only run 3-6 hr per day the PC’s run for 9 hr during the week and 12 hr on Fridays and Saturdays. hopefully this gives a little more info on how the ochtodes grow.

I will post more close up pics after the weekend.

I can't get a good pic with my camera but part of my ochtodes that is touching my blue tip stag looks like it is bleaching only instead of turning white its turning red.

my friend Aaron is coming over later and we will try to get a good pic with his camera.

has anyone else experienced macros getting stung by corral?

ok now after the drama that was the chaeto thread, has any one experience with algae turning white/red like in my tank after touching corals?
