I bought some hermit crabs today and i acclimated them and put them in the tank they have been doing laps for the past 3 hours (i have a 140 gallon.)I have a problem though the tank was used and i got it off craigslist i didnt think much of it but the silicon job was done pretty messy and the crabs have found out they can climb it to the tippy top is there anything i can do to stop them from climbing to the top i have a lid i just dont want any getting hurt

They most likely will not leave the water. My Hermits climb the silicone seems all the time and have never left the water. Mine is rimless with no top.

Mine climb every once in a while and have never gone past the waterline. I doubt there is anything to really worry about. I would just make sure you have empty shells because they might be on the look for a new home. I have ordered hermits from a few different places and every time most come in and switch shells the minute they hit the water. Once they find one they seem to calm down and stop the pacing like behavior they show prior to switching.

Yea i ordered like 20 empty shells from reef cleaners they come tomorrow and thanks for the reassurance guys i watched them for awhile last night and this morning they climb to the top take a look around then they seem to fall or jump off and gently float to the bottom its quite entertaining to watch

I've been wondering lately whether snails and crabs can crawl out of a rimless tank.

On my traditional tank with a rim it seems that the rim is the only thing keeping them in sometimes.

The snails can crawl all the way up to the rim so yea, they could get out but mine never have left the water line to my knowledge.

I have nerite snails that routinely leave the tank. I can sometimes hear them hit the floor if they fall. And I have even found them in other rooms after who knows how many days. Put them back in and they are moving in no time. But they are the only snails that I know of that we use in this hobby that can do this, and to take it even further it is only one particular species of Nerite we use.
