Hermit crab relocation

I recently dropped some new shells (from my last Florida vacation) into the tank in case the halloween hermit crab was needing larger digs. He checked out the largest one immediately, and I got the camera to see what happened. He lined up his current shell parallel (opening to opening) to the new one and I couldn’t see anything because the shells were so close. After a few minutes, he helpfully turned the new one over so I could get a better camera angle.

After some 10 minutes of checking it out and turning it over and picking up minute bits of whatever, he finally went in the new shell, but backed out again. Then he made the transfer and didn't back out.

He quickly turned around and smiled for the camera.

He struggled to get upright and walk. I thought maybe the shell was too big for him. Maybe he thought so too, because he went over and checked out another one, just to be sure.

It was really fun to be a spectator at this moving day!

I can't resist posting one more image. My hermit decided to change again today (slightly smaller model), but this time, exposed his body quite fully while doing so. I was able to get a good shot of anatomy you don't often see.

This is really cool. And how lucky were you to get a picture!!!
ive seen my land hermit crabs change shells, but unlike your marine hermit, have no color on there bodies. Thanks for sharing..I really enjoyed the great quality pics!!!!!!!

Wow, he's beautiful! Those are AWESOME pictures.

I have never had that much patience. I always take a nutcracker and gently break the shell they are in, and then leave them in a mixing bowl with a few new shells.

You know, I was just thinking, you should submit the pictures to wet web media for the fenner pic of the day.
