Hi Everyone! :) I thought now would be a good time to update the status on my Heteractis Malu's... I believe at this point that they're both H. Malu but if anyone thinks otherwise - you can sure let me know! I've also included the original thread on both of them so you can see where we decided they were Malu's...

Unfortunately RC wouldn't let me put it all in one post... so here they come! :)

This is my first one - and it's doing GREAT!! He's the one in my avatar - and that pic is photoshoped because I think it looks so cool and someone did it for me... here is a pic from when he first went into the tank on 2/26/08 - he is in my 30g breeder now - started in my 14g Biocube... Long story!

Since then he's really darkened up... It's hard to tell from these pictures - but he's almost doubled in size and he's much darker all around - a much deeper maroon and his outer ring tips that used to be off white are much darker now and are even sometimes light purple... He also hosts my black ocellaris pair ... He's in the worse section of the tank for pictures and I have coraline all over my viewing panes... need to get to that... but here's 2 pictures from today...

and here's a second pic - from the front of my tank...

then just for kicks here's a FTS of that tank...

Now for my other one...

Now - this one is beautiful too - but hasn't done as well... it's in my 14g Biocube. On Monday I did the Nanotuners 3.24 lighting upgrade so it'll now have 72 watts of PC light over it. Hopefully that will help it - it's attached strong and eats well - just isn't as dark as when I first got it... I'm hoping that with continued feedings and the new lights it'll get stronger. He still seems super healthy - just not as dark as I'd like.

Here is just 1 picture from his early days in the tank - he was put in on 2/29/08...

Here is one from today... right before he ate his scallop piece.. he was hungry!

And here is a fun one - this is how this anemone sleeps at night! Now my other Malu used to do that on occasion - but doesn't anymore with it's new placement in the tank... Isn't that weird? Is that ok?

Momma sleeps inside - Papa sleeps outside...

And then here is a FTS of this tank too...

(I know - I have a little cyano in there... need to suck it out)

Ok - so there is my anemone update! Enjoy :)

Oh well - Maybe that means no one has anything bad to say? Ok - I'll go with that

Hi Kim..the anemones are looking good ..I guess H. malu's tentacles don't ever get long like an H. Crispa..I didn't have my H. Malu long enough to see it close up at night like that. My H. Crispa is doing ok but I know it will be doing much better when I put the blue stripe clowns in the Tank.

Do you have to spot feed the green one with the purple tips or does your maroon clowns feed it for you? Um I am willing to bet you probably need more water movement in the tank with the green h. malu. That will keep the red slime from building up and your anemone might start to extend its tentacles. You could put in a Fluval Internal Filters from Hagen. You can get them from petsmart. They are nice, not only do they provide more water movement you can also put carbon and filter floss in them. You also don't have to worry about it sucking up your anemone. I have this fluval in my 24 gallon aquapod and my 34 gallon. My amphipods use the filter sponges in the fluval as a refugium. Just a suggestion..I think adding more water movement should make the green one look better.

This is what it looks like

Christina - that's so funny because I just asked someone last night about adding more flow to that tank! You're right it doesn't have enough at all! I was considering adding a Korelia Nano as I have one I'm currently not using -but didn't know where in the tank to put it?

Do you have any ideas on that?

I'll google the fluval thing you mentioned - maybe that might even be better... You don't have any pictures of it in action - do you?

Oh - and as for spot feeding - I do spot feed both of them. Neither of my clowns do any feeding of their nems... I know other people report it - but I haven't had any luck with it at all.

My black o's steal any food they can right out of their nem's mouth...

My Maroons leave it alone to eat - but never take any food to it...

I would love to see an update on your Crispa! And your new clowns :)

I am not going to post any new pictures of the new clowns or my Crispa untill they are together. I did post a picture of them after the cupramine treatment. I have a picture of them with their fake aquascape in the 29 if you would like to see that?

Hmm - so do you empty out the filter media then?

Do you think I could accomplish the same thing with the korelia that I already have? If so - where would you put it in the tank?

I'm home all day today - so maybe I could try this?

Of course I would! :)

How much longer are they in there and when do they get head into the big tank with their Crispa?

I put mine in the middle of the tank pointing forward. I wash out the filter sponges every week or every other week.. when I do water changes. I use the change water to wash them out so I don't kill the live bacteria living in the sponges. I put one carbon filter in there or filter floss once a week. These are safe to put anywhere in the tank. My purple lta likes sitting under it..that is how safe it is.

Edit picture of the Chrysopterus with their fake aquascape..hmm I should of cleaned the glass..oh well.:D

I want to put them in the tank this weekend but people say I should wait another week:(

They look great!!!

I love their fake aquascaping :)

I feel your pain of wanting to put them in this weekend - I can understand that!

For now I took my Korelia Nano and put it right next to kind of above where the water flows back in from the back chamber. The spout of that sits kind of on top of where the Korelia pulls in water...

I'm going to try that for today - see how it does with the increased flow (my whole tank looks happier already - although I can get any pictures yet!)... then I'm going to go out to petsmart today to see if they have one of those locally...

Thanks Christina!

You could put the koralia on the left side of the tank far away from the anemone but I don't know will that be enough because I don't have a nano koralia. I thought about putting a koralia in the tank with my lta.. but knew I would have nightmares of it getting sucked into the powerhead. That is the reason why I suggested the fluval...no worries about the anemone getting sucked in.

Brown/Grey H. Malu

Ok - so ever since I added the more flow... (a few days after the light upgrade).... my brown/grey H. Malu (or possibly still Crispa) is not doing well!

He has deflated more and more each day - not his normal waste expelling... and had his mouth open (but no guts hanging out)... This morning he was about a 1/4 of the size he was a week and a half ago!!!

Should I be extremely worried? Or is he just acclimating to all the changes in the tank - new lights and new flow?

Last night I finally turned off the Korelia - thinking that the flow was just irritating him too much... He's still in the same place...

Any ideas? I need to do a water change - so I'll do that night - and test the water.. But I don't know what's going on?

aww.. I was hoping you would say the flow really helped the anemone. Did you get the red slime out before adding more water flow? I would put this post in a new thread to make other sebae owners notice it. I don't know what to tell you..can you post a picture? Hopefully the water change will help it.:(

I didn't get all the slime out first... I'll get the slime out tonight - do a water change - see how things look then post new pictures...

It seems really odd to me because he was really healthy and happy before the lighting & flow? I wonder if I introduced the extra light too fast and he's acclimating to that...

Well - I decided that it would be better to do a water change tonight... since I'm going to need to be taking rocks out and gluing stuff on in that tank with my new shipment of goddies coming today. So I'm going to do the water change tonight - after I pull out some rocks and glue on some new stuff - that's going to create a bit of a sandstorm so I thought I should do the water change after that... He looked a little better last night and today...

I have a koralia nano in my 12g and I love it. It's compact, provides a good, wide flow pattern, and plenty of flow.
