Hex Tank Set up

hi guys,
I just purchased a 40 Long oceanic hex from PetCo only coz they had the sale for $1 per gallon. has anyone set up a tank with only a canister filter? I was thinking three small fish max and some filter feeders nothing light dependent. any thoughts would be greatly appreciated, even one saying I shouldnt do it.

uhm now dont quote me...i believe i heard hexes arent that good for SW only good for seahorses. i believe its because of the oxygen. i think it could work though.

im sure someone has better advice then i do. :)

good luck

Dex,

You are a freak man!
How many tanks can you set up at one given time? :D
Jen's gonna love that LIPA bill

My brother Doug had a hex set up--he may chime in here-- and it worked ok. It was probably about the same size, maybe a 30, and he had a single 400W MH pendant over it. For filtration though, he drilled the bottom twice and put a single long pvc overflow and a return , which both fed to a DIY rubbermaid sump. The sump had an AquaC Remora HOB skimmer and a phosban reactor. And he did lots of big water changes.

Why not put a HOB skimmer right on the tank instead of the canister? That, a good sand bed and some live rock and I think you'd be fine--

The reason people like hexes for seahorses is that they are tall, which most people believe is necessary for seahorse mating.

the tank is Hex "Long", maybe like a 20 with pointy ends.

Warr, set up for office, dont really care if I put a 1000w MH in that Baby!

Yeah mine was coming along fine until there was that washing soda accident... I did indeed drill it and plumb overflow and return all the way to the top - using 1in pvc or something like that. To get flow I used two maxi 1200's and staggered them top to bottom (plus the return which I angled ) so all pumped out across the sides- not across like you would usually do in a rectangular tank - sort of like a vortex flow around the tank. And I did use a 400W MH because of the depth - probably not necessary though. I had some RBTA's that were happy, a clam (crocea), some damsels, lawnmower belnny, pseudochromis, all were well.
