To answer the question too.
The pump will pull the most air the shallower it runs. A good thing but if it is too shallow it will start sucking air from the surface. That will mess up the air/water mixture and thats bad. So as shallow as you can run it without sucking air in the water intake. Like 3-4". When I had it set up with the stock pump it just hung off the hose.
