I was curious if there is such a thing as one of those slim point and shoot cameras with a decent macro or white balance option? Im in the market for one and am having trouble picking something out in the endless amounts of cameras out there

Your best bet might be to start online. Check out this website, it's pretty comprehensive on just about all digital cameras that are out there:

Steve's Digicams Website

Do a search on macro or white balance and see what you can come up with. You can also search for specific models you are interested in and see their specs for macro and white balance on this website. I've used it for every digital camera purchase I've made (I'm getting ready to buy my 4th one).

If your looking for an everyday point and shoot camera I would recommend a Canon camera. Any SD400 and up should have a lot of settings that you can use. Of course anyone can own a really good camera but it will be the user that makes the most of it. So practice with it and eventually you will get great results.

armando,
I use a sony cybershot dscn-1, it is one of there pricier one because it has touch screen and stuff like that, but the macro feature is pretty good and the camera is user friendly. at the time i bought it for my girl it just came out and was there newest model. now they have come down considerably. probably 400 bucks or even less

My sister has that same camera and I have personally owned a Sony as well. They are good but Canon blows them out the water when it comes to Macro lenses. With my SD900 I can be about 5 cm away from the object and take a really sharp and crispy picture. Not to mention I hated the delay with the flash when I use Sony cameras, hence "point and shoot"... people expect a picture to be taken right away not a few seconds later.

yeah the older cybershot that i had did have the delay but the new one does not do that.

lets see some pics w/ your canon. i'd like to see some nice macro shots. i've been getting into taking some better pics lately and would be in the market as well.

Every manufacturer has good an bad points...that's why I don't usually make specific recommendations. Everyone has different likes/dislikes. That's why going to the stores to get your hands on the cameras is good and websites like Steve's are good to get all of the info. you need to make the proper decision.

i have a sd900 as well and the macro function is much better than my last P&S (the sd100 - quite a jump, eh?)

the only problems i have with the new camera is that it has such high quality pictures in the iso auto function that it sometimes takes a very long shutter... im probably going to get a tripod to help with that... but other than the one little problem i think its a great cam...

I just picked up a monopod last nite that works great. As long as you have the stability to lean on a table or something, it's good until you get up to super long shutter speeds.

Here are some decent shots that I was able to make with no tripod or anything... just point and shoot.

Videos are not that bad either.

its been a while since i've taken pictures. maybe i will stop being lazy and get around to doing it

Sweet shots Eric...get back to it! I do alot of my macro shots just leaning on the stand/glass. But I'm realizing that I must have a steadier hand than most people, since I shoot some longer exposures that way than most do. You must have that knack too.

a view tips

first decide on your total budget. your total budget means batteries, charger, memory cards, lenses, flash and any other accessories you might want to get.
even with a point and shoot camera you most likely will need cf/sd memory and rechargeable batteries.
after subtracting the price of these accessories you then will have a total left to spend on the camera.
you soon might find out that a budget of $500.00 can leave you with only $150.00 left for the actual camera (if you would like fast extreme III 4GB memory at $200.00, two sets of rechargeable batteries with charger at $100.00 and a slave flash at $50.00)
that's why it is important to know your total budget.
then shopping for the camera is a lot easier, instead buying a camera like the canon SDXXX you buy the AXXX series for example.
you will save a lot of money just by buying AA batteries instead of canon specific batteries and instead paying $100.00 you only pay $30.00 for the batteries and if you're someplace and your battery just dies, you can actually just use regular AAs until you recharge yours.
that is $70 more for the camera and you're now shopping for a $220.00 camera instead of a $150.00 one.
with point and shoot cameras a good rule of thumb I found is that you spend half of your money on accessories and the other half on the camera.
with SLR cameras it's about 1/3 on the body and two thirds on accessories.
I always crack up to see someone with a $1000.00 SLR body and a $80.00 lens on it.
and to top it of some memory that takes 5 seconds to write the file to and a flash that takes 10 sec to recharge.

ohh, one more thing, don't get to cut up in the mega pixel race, if you're not into professional picture printing etc. anything at more than 4mp will do just fine and there is absolutely no need for that 10mp camera.
