Hey Ernesto! YOU AND ME-- OUTSIDE-- NOW!

You wussy little tropical depression piece of crap! You knock out my power, kill my blue tang, my yellow tang, destroy two years worth of growth on my fuzzy yellow bottlebrush (it may even die yet), and bleach out a good bit of another one of my sps and almost killed my clowns! You think you are sooooo tough sneaking up on me here in WV and knocking out my power for 2 days. Whatever! You are NOTHING but a two-bit COWARD! Come on over here and let's have a little face to face chat, shall we????

I got a generator and saved the rest of the Zen Reef. You owe me a lot of money and I know you won't pay up so I'll have to take it out of your arse!:mad2: :mad2: :mad2: :mad2: :mad2: :mad2: :mad2:

Ouch. I had to do the same thing a few months ago. Managed to keep everything alive thankfully. Which reminds me I still need to get a generator......

If/when that happens again, reach out to your fellow club members. My power never went off and I have a portable generator that could have helped, or an ER tank which could have housed your fish. I can't imagine our fav LFS wouldn't have helped out, too. I'm thinkin' we are all committed to these creatures and would be willing to help out. Just a phone call away. JKJ

Dam Jason that BITES :( Is your H. Crispa OK?

That's a large part of what this club is about.

I have a tree on my house thanks to the storm, but I never lost power.

Estimate 1700.00 for removal. Ouch.

Sorry you lost your fish Jason. Should have called someone, provided you were home when all this started. Or did you return to find the powerout?

So many questions...

Yes amy, the crispa is fine. It has made it through much worse. As you know, I don't buy into this crap about anemones being one of the most difficult animals to keep. I have kept many different species that did nothing but thrive. Most of them were "most difficult" to keep and I only got rid of them b/c it was time to move on (getting too big and not in step with where my tank was headed). I got the crispa with long-term reefing in mind. I wanted a natural host for my percs and I wanted it to be colorful and one that would not need a 300 gallon tank at some point. Seven years down the road and my Heteractis crispa is still my favorite inhabitant. I had to make a plexiglass wall to keep it off my pavona and that has worked well. One thing I have learned over the past 10 years is that the Zen Reef is nothing if not tough and resilliant. It has to be to put up with me. (Kind of like my wife!!)

3 doors: You don't get T-storms in CT????

Reaching out? It happened so fast. When the power has gone out before my reef was not this mature and full of life. Upset the balance in a system like that in such a major way and WHAMMO! You get kicked in the nuts hard and fast. Can't move corals-- they are grown to the rocks. Can't catch fish-- they hide in the rockwork, which you can't get apart because it's grown together. I'm in trouble if I have to move this thing. Only option is to get a generator ASAP.

Live and learn.

I can't imagine our fav LFS wouldn't have helped out

Yeh me either, actually I helped as much as I could on this as far as Jason wanted anyway. Moving those corals would have been nearly impossible and a likely disaster though. I don't think you realize how big Jasons SPS colonies are. Anyway, you know if they dont pull through we will find a way to rebuild your reef man.

We should all ban togethire, and help our Zan-reefer brother out in his time of need. I think we should all send him a little something, provided he accepts it, and show him how much we really care.

Nice gesture guys and I appreciate it. All I really want is to find another "fuzzy yellow bottlebrush" acropora thingie from ORA. I'm not asking for a handout, just a supplier. It was my favorite sps. Of course it had to be a slow grower and extremely delicate-- at least when it comes to ammonia. I can replace the blue hippo and the yellow tang and the chromis. Everything else made it with a little die-back on a couple specimens.

Since that's out of the way now, I'll move on to more important matters! Obviously I got kicked in the teeth. Thankfully I have family with generators I can borrow (and friends too-- thanks gang!) who saved the rest of my reef! It cost me $30 worth of gasoline but what the heck?

Anyway, I do not have the money right now to buy my own gernerator. Many of you probably fall into that category as well. So here is the solution I have come up with: A deep-cycle marine battery (a car battery will suffice), a DC to AC power inverter, and a trickle charger. Total cost estimate $50. $20 for a cheapo car battery, $20 for a cheapo power inverter, and $10 for a cheap tricle charger. This power supply should be enough to run a couple powerheads and maybe even a skimmer for 2 to 3 days.

Can you say CHEAP INSURANCE for a potential disaster????

I am now making it an official position of the club that all members should have such a set up. I'm VERY LUCKY that I did not lose more than I did and that I had the resources to forestall a total meltdown.

Happy reefing!
Jason

Do I hear group buy? I wonder what kind of discount they would give us if we all bought our deep cycle marine batteries together.

Ten days later and some stuff is still recovering. Unfortunately, My purple-tipped acro seems to be going downhill fast. Also, I have bryopsis growing on the bare skeleton on my damaged sps. I have not had bryopsis in years and never in this aquarium. Why is it only growing at these specific sites? I have no idea.

I can say that acropora seems to be far more sensitive to ammonia than other varieties of sps like monti, birdnest, hydno, pavona, cat's paw, and pocillopora. None of them were affected. In fact, the hydnophora seemed to enjoy it!!! Swelling up and soaking up the nutrients! The clam survived and has made a complete recovery. My grandparents surprised me with a new yellow tang the other day.

Just an update.
