Hey Norman do you use povidone iodine 10%?

Mark,

I've used Lugols at a rate of 5 drops per 8oz of saltwater. I've also used 2% tincture of iodine at a rate of 10-12 drops per 8oz of saltwater. Tincture is inexepensive and readily available, so it's normally what I use.

Those dosing rates are for a strong iodine dip. Regular strength would be half that.

I've not tried povidone. I"ll google the composition of that one in a bit.

So Betadine is the same as povidone?

I saw a reference to 10% povidone having 1% available iodine.

So it's probably important to figure your dosage on the basis of the iodine rather than the polymer weight.

Lugol's is 5% iodine. The KI portion is for solubility purposes and not for bacteridal effects.

The soluble polymer portion of the povidone is for carrying the iodine, right? And it's biologically inert.

So I'm guessing you use 5x as much povidone as you would Lugol's.

Btw, I also saw 5% tincture of iodine at Long's yesterday. Strong tincture, it was called.

Betadine has been reported as being used in Europe to battle AEFWs, but I don't know how credible that "report" was. We use TMPCC here, a bit expensive, but out of the 2 bottles we bought earlier this year, we are still only on the first one. I thought for sure I would finish it off tonight (we had over 25 frags to dip/mount), but there are still a few "squirts" left in that bottle :)

I was using the TMPCC to battle the AEFW, but after the first bottle and a half I switched to Betadine (plain old Walgreens brand)

I was using stronger doses of 2ml of betadine for every 10ml of water to treat for the flatworms.

My dipping regime is probably closer to 2ml for 20-25 ml of water and blowing stuff off with a turkey baster.

Ok, some rough guessing here which may or may not be on target.

1ml = ~20 drops
Betadine = 10% povidone-iodine which is 1% active iodine
Lugol's is 5% iodine with KI

The Betadine at 2ml per 25ml is about 32ml per gallon. Times 1%/5% would mean that Betadine at that dosage gives about 6x the iodine as standard strength Lugol's dip.

Povidone probably does a better controlled release of the iodine than does the KI solution in Lugol's.

At your dosing rate, your dip is still 3x stronger than a "strong" Lugol's dip.

I'll give the Betadine a try. Probably less harsh on corals than Lugol's.

I've seen strong Lugols stun zoa nudis, monti nudis, and acro flatworms. I could believe that Betadine at 3x stronger would really do a job on those pests.

I noticed that with the povidone iodine with 3-4 drops in about 400mls of water all of the red flatworms shriveled up and were killed within about 20 minutes. I soaked all my frags for about an hour and they all seem to be doing well.

The one thing I found is that the povidone iodine does not seem to stress the corals (specifically sps) as TMPCC did in the same amount time.

I'm glad it worked out Mark.

Sorry for the math error, folks. Eeesh!

That should be ~300ml/gal, for 60x the iodine as a standard Lugol's dup.
