Hey Old Timers... recommendations please

Well hello Crooked Reef

Tank dimensions are 18x18x18 and I would like to keep a mixed reef. Though not to much sps entrusting montis a bird's nest would be nice.
I lean towards zoas and lps

Depending on budget you could use any of the Chinese black box lights. Next step up would be an AI prime HD, but you may not get the coverage you want out of one. The AI hydra 26 is the two puck unit and has a manufacturers recommended coverage of 18X18. I run two radion xr15 gen 4 pros on my 90 gallon and each covers a 24X18X24 area and could keep derasa and maxima clams on the bottom until my wrasse and tang decided to start picking at them. I’m not sure if the prior generation xr15 are as powerful but the xr30 May be overkill. There are Kessils that will work as well but I have never had one or researched them too much so I’m not sure which one. I would say probably the 160 or 360 but not the A80. Kessil is a pendant and will give a shimmer like a halide as well.

Whatever you decide make sure to start them low and work their way up on intensity. Much different than t-5 or halides and you can bleach corals quickly if you aren’t careful. The intensity may not need to be as high as you think it will either even when you get to the highest intensity you plan on using. It may be as low as 30% depending on a few things.

I'm old school and like MH the best , but as far as LED's I like kessil's and your best bet would be the 360WE tuna blue. I am using two 160's on a 36 gallon tank. I like how the kessil's place all the Led's tight under one len's. help prevent the disco ball effect.
