And my very 1st thread here was locked!
Anyway I have 45 Erectus fry that are just over one week old and would love to talk about them. I promice to not talk about soild carbon dosing that seems to be a bad topic.

TeresaQ,

Just did 100% water change and they are on their way to a 20 long.

Most are eating frozen cycolpezze now and 2 to 3 day old enriched brine with Dan's feed. Still have to have the BBS ready for the runts.

TeresaQ I miss SW FL .

Nice. Hope they do well, All those water changes are a pain, but worth it.
Are you rinsing your bbs in peroxide?? It really seemed to help mine once I started.

Teresa I use decap and find just rinsing in my toxic tap water is more then enough. Besides I'm a retired hairdresser and the last thing I want to see is peroxide in my Golden years! :spin2:

Thats funny, because I get my peroxide from the beauty supply store. lol
it kills the bacteria the bbs can have - I had less itching and deaths after I started using it.
How are the babies doing.

Teresa this batch is realy doing well we are at that point where they all hitch at night ( so cute)! There are two non-eaters and they should have been culled a long time ago and wish I had the heart to do it as it's sad to see them trying to live.

Brine are dirty nasty creatures not only do I use decap but hatch them in untreated tap water with cheap salt. When I enrich I use RODI with a good salt mix and after the 12 hour feeding rinse them in tap and back into good water with Dan's feed for 12 more hours, it works for me .
Do you do the Formalin treatment at birth? Whoever found this out needs an award.

Yes, I do use formalin. I will need to purchase more, Im almost out.

I know what oyu mean about not wanting to cull. I have 3 or 4 in my 11 week old batch that are small and skinny. I see them eat now and then so I leave them, hoping they will catch up.

The two in this batch that needed culled gave up the ghost !
I was wrong on the count after the two non eaters gave it up, I have 28 left after a real count on their way to a 20 long.
Some fun oddball's in this batch have that half yellow half black thing going on (not Pinto) Just odd , like an all yellow body with a black tail or black snout with yellow body. The 3 week mark comes this Sunday and that's when I will exhale.

Congratulations John....what will you go to after enriched BBS?????? That kinda in-between peroid bothers me...too big for BBS and too small for frozen cyclopeese......

Formalin has been used in aquaculture for quite some time. Others deserve credit for much of its use. 7 to 8 years ago when we first started I would not accept the answer that ammonia was the cause of seahorse fry scratching. Frank Gangi was the who suggested that it was protozoa irritating the fry as the cause and suggested formalin. Abbie was the one who experimented and developed the our protocol which we have been passing on for some time. Her protocol varies among the species.

We are searching and experimenting for ways around this as formalin has some safety issues with humans, is becoming difficult and expensive to get and I believe there has to be another way of accomplishing the task.

When I drain my BBS I do in a 5 gallon bucket. I drain enriched BBS (24 hr) as well as newly hatched into this bucket ( no air). Low and behold after 4 to 5 days hundreds of semi grown out brine ready to enrich from the ones that slipped by in this process. Once they take the semi grown out shrimp I add shaven frozen mysis to the mix then when they are big enough to take ABS the shaved frozen becomes whole mysis and taper off the live .

This process realy smells so do it in the garage !

Dan every time I use it it reminds me of a new RV smell!
It is impossible to get here near JAX now. Hopefully you guys will figure something out, meanwhile I'm thankful we can still get it from you and Abbie.
