Hi Wine County Reefers. I'm a local (Windsor) reefer, who has a BC29 that has been up for around 2 years. I've been considering going to a new tank, but am not sure the best place to get what I am looking for. I was hoping for a large footprint, shallower tank. Maybe 36x24x12 or 24x24x12. Not sure exactly how tall I want it, but I'd like the depth to be 24". The width I'm also unset on, but I'm looking between 36" and 24". I have a 20" NEP now, so if it can light a 24" wide tank okay, I'll probably do that. If I have to get a longer light anyway, I might go the full 36" long. I want the tank to be glass....and rimless.

Any suggestions, fire away. I'm going to try and start bing more active over here at RC. I've been an active member of another board for some time, but don't find a lot of active locals there.

PS: If this isn't the place for this thread, sorry.
 
Welcome GiantBen, you are in the right place. I am also in windsor so it's nice to find a reefing neighbor ;)

Many people are getting rid of tanks these day so you might want to keep checking the local clubs such as bayarea and Mars, also I think someone here was selling a cube so hopefully they will chime in.
 
I have a bunch of old tanks lying around that my wife would love for me to part with... they range from 10 gals to 65 gals, homemade (by others) to Red Sea Max in terms of construction. If you figure out what you're looking for and want to buy used rather than new, we can probably work something out!

Used is fine for me. I assume the hardest part of getting a used tank is getting a stand (that my wife likes) that goes with it. I've been trolling craigslist, but all I find are standard dimension tanks, which don't fit the deeper, shorter theme I was looking at.
 
If you were interested, my Red Sea Max (35 gal) has a stand, but I would recommend buying a new canopy/lighting system since the one that is one it now is "in need of repair" (fans are WAY too loud to want in your house :-) ).

I also have a 65 gal acrylic that is roughly 36" x 24" x 18" deep (top to bottom) and came with a pretty nice stand/canopy (all home made)... and I believe the canopy is still at least partially wired for lighting (I'd have to check though).

I also have a roughly 50 gal bowfront that was given to me, and a 75 gallon glass tank with homemade stand/canopy and lighting (that I've never fired up)... I'd have to check the dimensions, but I think it might be more along the "deeper, shorter" lines you mentioned above... I'd have to go out and measure it to know for sure though.

Anyhow, lemme know if any of the above interest you, and if they do, I can get the actual details rather than my vague memories of the specs :-)

Thanks. I'm not sure these matchup with what I'm looking for, but I have to admit I'm looking for something rather specific. I'll let you know if any of that changes.

ALso, at what size tank should I be worried about checking to see if my floor can support the wieght? Over 100 gal? I'm not looking that big, just curious.
 
Welcome giantben, a 100 will weigh when filled about 1000-1200 pounds so at that size you should start looking at the framing strength.

Thanks Grant. I'm hoping to stay half that size or so, but now I certainly won't be tempted by any deals I find....unless they are just great :)
